Wall of love for The Acagamic Online Courses

Hilda Hadan

University of Waterloo

This course not only provides details about what each section of the paper should focus on. It also explains, from a reviewer's perspective, how CHI submissions get reviewed, what kind of paper structures can best communicate your research idea, and how to write your paper so it's interesting to the CHI audience. As a junior researcher, these are very important tips. The course is short, not time-consuming, but has very informative content. I would recommend new researchers, especially those planning to submit to CHI, to take this course.

UX Designer

I have worked in games since 1991. When I shifted my focus to UX Design in the mid-2000's all of the best material (books, courses, blogs) were focused on the design principles around interactive experiences, but rarely mention the game experience other than the occasional reference to "gamification" a topic that really has very little to do with designing an immersive game experience. Lennart Nacke's course, "How to do User Research for Games" helped bring much-needed focus to applying UX principles and interaction patterns to game design and using User Research to show the value of those principles to stakeholders.

Advanced Common Sense

I know a fair amount about UX research (I’m mostly known as the person who wrote Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability), but I’ve never had much exposure to UX research for games, even though it’s always seemed very interesting. Recently, I took a chance on an online talk Lennart was giving, and I was so impressed that I immediately signed up for a short course that he was doing. What blew me away the most was just how clear and to-the-point all of his explanations and examples were. I felt like I learned a lot in just four hours, even about things I already knew about. Now I’ve got the textbook he edited, and am looking forward to learning even more. I highly recommend any talks or classes he’s giving!

Jana Funke
Hi, I'm Jana Funke a young HCI researcher in Ulm University. In my research I try to motivate and find new ways to support people doing physical exercise. I really love the courses and teaching style from Dr. Lennart Nacke. While giving clear structured advice he manages to create a pleasant and enjoyable atmosphere! Thanks for creating this very good and as far as I know standalone course to learn writing good CHI Papers.

I am a PhD candidate at uOttawa and I really benefitted from seeing this from reviewer's perspective. I was really struggling with finishing things, finishing in time, I think I have some resources now which can help me graduate.

I was fortunate to be among those who attended this course when it was offered for the first time at CHI 2017. It is not an exaggeration that of all the courses/tutorials I have previously attended at conferences, this course on How to Write Better Research Papers had a lasting impact on me. Before attending this course, I had read various blogs and books on writing research papers, but the learnings and overall value addition from this course were significant. That’s because of the way the course was structured. It wasn’t just a series of lectures, but after each short lecture, we were required to complete a writing exercise and Dr. Nacke provided feedback on the spot. In each short lecture, we learned the structure/formula of writing each component of the paper such as the Abstract, Introduction, Methodology, and so on. The key takeaway for me was that this course taught me how critical is it for the author to be reader-centric in their writing. This encompasses focusing on the clarity and structure of each section such that the writing is expected to create a change in the reader. Dr. Nacke did mention that achieving clarity in writing is the key to capturing a reader’s attention and it requires extensive practice. Lastly, a huge benefit of attending this course is that I have been receiving new materials over the years, and importantly, Dr. Nacke regularly interviews highly accomplished researchers who share their wisdom on writing research papers, and their suggestions are quite valuable. To summarize, if you come across an opportunity to attend this course, don’t miss it. I highly recommend it based on my personal experience.

Lennart Nacke I definitely like the summaries. I really like the current format of the tips. As someone who is less than a year in the field, I am highly interested in UX strategy for games and practical tips for conducting user research- which you do really well I think. I would also be really interested in tools that are used to conduct research and playtesting, specially with things being more remote now. I hope this helps a little! If I think of anything else, I will be sure to let you know.

I strongly recommend Prof. Dr. Lennart Nacke. I started taking the “How to write better research papers” course and was surprised by how it is taught. It shows, objectively and clearly, how to organize the research so that it is understandable to other audiences while also being more engaging to readers. The course also helped me to rethink how I design my experiments, making new research better formatted to facilitate the writing of the articles later. This course is a must-have for any researcher, novice or established in the field.

After taking Dr. Nacke's course, I now have a clear understanding of academic paper structure and the most crucial aspects that I should focus on for my paper to stand out. Taking this course has given me the knowledge and confidence I needed to take the leap to pursue a PhD degree. If you are like me who wanted to go further into research, this course is a must!

WOW! What a course. It was fantastic. Motivation was maintained throughout the day with loads of opportunities to be involved. It was very well organised and thought out. I am pretty sure it has already improved my writing.

So glad to take this course on how to peer review for CHI. I knew it would be awesome. Why? I took the course on how to write CHI papers at CHI'18, and now I have published at CHI'20, CHI'21, and CHI'22! twitter.com/acagamic/status/1516166391128276993

I enjoyed @acagamic (Lennart Nacke)'s webinar on how to run user research studies for games so much (watch it at uxpa.org/aiovg_videos/running-games-user-research-studies-webinar/on) that I immediately signed up for his short course (4 Fridays x 1 hr, $100). 1/2
