Where did we work together? BioLegend. What did you enjoy about our collaboration? Ali had a relentless focus on achieving quality results through long-lasting consensus. The solutions we built during our time together are largely still in use nearly 2 years later, and he left behind a strong blueprint for future solutions after he moved on to other challenges. Any memories that stand out? While designing passing criteria for a new procedure Ali worked with us to comb through all of our historical testing results to identify what our expected performance would be in objective terms. He then called meetings with upstream and downstream teams to generate a consensus on how to handle the risks generated when this expected performance was not met. Thoughtful communication and compromise across several stake holders yielded a section of our QSP that has stood strong since. This entire process took place across 3 meetings over a week and a half.

I cannot overstate how instrumental Ali was in helping me start my career in Biotech. At the end of my PhD, I was unfamiliar with the world of Biotech and uncertain as to how to build my professional network. Ali identified my translatable skills, initiated conversations with key players in Biotech/Biopharma, and refined my job-hunting approach. Working with Ali was like a crash course in applying common sense to fixing our product pipeline. When faced with a huge manufacturing backlog, Ali wasn’t afraid to challenge the status quo and ask the tough questions that made us realize where our blockages really were. He then followed through and enabled our team to develop real solutions that resolved our recurring backorder problem within four months - with a positive attitude and great sense of humor to boot! It was truly amazing to see the positive change in our team is so short a time.

I met Ali working at Spatial Genomics and then we both proceeded to help found the company Proteintech Genomics. Ali stands out to me as a master of breaking down problems into small solvable chunks, creating a plan to tackle those issues, and executing that plan to completion. While doing this, Ali both takes into account the big picture of how this plan fits into the grand scheme of the company as well staying detail-oriented and grounded, ensuring that the plan is efficient and effective for the company. Besides his excellent technical abilities, Ali is very communicative and friendly, making him a great teammate to work with. While our paths separated after our adventure at Proteintech Genomics, I look forward to working with him in the future!

I met Ali when he was a post-doc and I was in the PhD program at the University of North Dakota. He helped me troubleshoot issues I was having with an immunohistochemistry experiment and he consistently checked in to see my research was going and to provide some insight and advice when I was struggling. When I began my job search, he had moved on to a new position in industry, but he reached out to see how my PhD was going and whether I was looking to move into industry. I told him I felt lost, and he was quick to offer his time and advice. He explained the differences between industry and academic expectations for research scientists/postdocs and helped me to get my resume from 3 pages to 1 page in less than a week (absolutely amazing!). He enthusiastically connected me with a number of contacts who worked in the research areas I was interested in, and additionally spent time coaching me for interviews. Dr. Ali Divan and I worked together in the Technical Operations department at Truvian Sciences. Affectionately know by the team as the “Stability Bros”, we together recognized that there was a fundamental need to develop rigorous protocols aimed at understanding the performance of our reagent systems in both wet and dried formats. We looked to address any gaps with novel excipient screening studies aimed at achieving customer expectations. This critical work literally “righted the ship” setting Truvian on its current path toward the goal of launching a 3 modality point-of-care diagnostic analyzer, capable of producing hematology, clinical chemistry and immunoassays from a small volume of whole blood. Ali values transparency, honesty, collaboration, a good laugh, and above all else, scientific rigor that is based on sound principles and logic.
