As Principal Reservoir Engineer in PETRONAS, I’m pleased to share our experience working with CMG’s simulation software and technical support during the Megah subsurface evaluation and development studies. The support from CMG team was exceptional, especially Nader Ghadami. The Megah project involved a technically challenging carbonate reservoir system, requiring close integration of well test interpretation, pressure transient analysis, and dynamic single well modelling to understand reservoir connectivity, tested volume distribution, and production sustainability. CMG’s simulation tools played a key role in supporting these evaluations by enabling robust numerical modelling and sensitivity analysis aligned with the geological and pressure data available from the well. That enabled our team to successfully upgrade the single well model to full field. Throughout the study, CMG provided reliable technical support and responsive engagement, supporting the modelling workflow from early concept screening through to structured technical reviews and internal decision forums. Their team demonstrated a strong understanding of carbonate reservoir behaviour, well test dynamics, and model based uncertainty evaluation, while maintaining a collaborative and professional working relationship with our subsurface team. The use of CMG’s tools and technical input contributed meaningfully to our ability to interpret Megah test results, assess reservoir connectivity, and evaluate development relevant scenarios in a technically consistent and auditable manner. Based on our experience, we are pleased to recommend CMG to teams undertaking complex subsurface and dynamic modelling studies, and we look forward to continued collaboration as our projects progress.

My graduate students and I selected the CMG GEM reservoir simulator to model and predict CO₂ mineralization in mafic and ultramafic formations for permanent carbon storage in the subsurface. With over twenty years of experience using CMG's cutting-edge reservoir simulators, we highly value CMG-GEM’s accuracy, technical robustness, continuous R&D advancements, and strong user support. CMG has generously supported this work by providing both server-based and standalone academic licenses, enabling the efficient execution of numerous complex simulation scenarios. This capability has been essential for evaluating the effects of temperature, pressure, porosity, permeability, mineralogy, geochemical reactions, geomechanical factors, and injection strategies on CO₂ mineralization. Simulations performed using CMG GEM form the analytical foundation of ongoing graduate theses (M.S. and Ph.D.). The resulting datasets are also being used to develop machine-learning-based proxy models for computationally efficient reactive flow analysis under uncertainty. CMG’s comprehensive technical documentation and responsive support have been instrumental in model setup, calibration, and interpretation. Access to an industry-standard simulator has significantly enhanced the scientific rigor and practical relevance of our research. We gratefully acknowledge CMG’s continued support of our research and educational activities and strongly recommend CMG to academic, research institutions as well as energy companies engaged in energy transition and decarbonization-focused reservoir modeling.

I am a researcher in petroleum engineering at the University of Houston, currently working on integrated modeling for CO₂ storage and emerging energy systems. CMG’s CoFlow simulator has been instrumental in our work by enabling fully integrated surface–wellbore–reservoir modeling. This capability has allowed us to move beyond conventional standalone reservoir simulation and capture critical system-level effects such as wellbore flow behavior, phase transitions, pressure losses, and injectivity constraints. The training, licensing support, and responsiveness from the CMG team have also been very helpful in accelerating our research and implementation. The best thing about CoFlow, is its ability to provide a unified, system-level framework that connects surface facilities, wellbore dynamics, and reservoir behavior. This integrated approach delivers more realistic and reliable predictions compared to conventional methods. We have validated this through comparative studies and successfully extended its application to CO₂ storage, hydrogen storage, and field-based case studies. Overall, CoFlow represents a significant advancement in simulation capability, and we see strong potential for it to become a standard tool for integrated modeling in carbon storage and energy transition projects.

As a PhD student whose research is focused on carbon storage, I really appreciate working with CMG-GEM. The software is an estabilished benchmark in simulating CO2 injection and trapping, implementing not only fluid-dynamics and geomechanical models but also geochemistry.

What I appreciate the most about CMG is the quickness and efficiency of the support. They helped me through many issues I had in implementing numerical simulations in basic but also complicate scenarios: from mineral dissolution and precipitation in saline aquifers to CO2 and methane competitive adsorption in coal. They provided a very fast solution when possible or an alternative way to perform the simulation.

I really appreciated the human-to-human interactions and willingness to solve problems. Moreover, the commercial support is very engaging, caring about updating to the latest software updates through invitation to webinars or sharing documentation.

I am sure CMG will continue to stand out in the future!

Using CMG STARS for thermal reservoir simulation has been an excellent experience. The software stands out for its user-friendly interface, which makes complex simulation tasks much more approachable. Even for advanced modeling scenarios, the workflow feels intuitive and efficient, allowing me to focus on the technical aspects rather than struggling with the tool itself. The simulation capabilities are robust, particularly for thermal recovery processes, and the results are both reliable and insightful. CMG STARS provides the flexibility to handle detailed reservoir characteristics while maintaining clarity in setup and output. This balance between powerful functionality and ease of use is what makes it such a valuable tool for reservoir engineers and researchers.

Nader Gadhami provided exceptional support during our CO2-brine relative permeability study. His guidance was crucial in implementing an innovative coreflood simulation workflow using CMG GEM, which allowed us to simulate CT scan saturation profiles slice by slice and directly integrate them with our experimental data. This capability greatly improved our interpretation of gas–brine relative permeability by accurately capturing saturation distribution, differential pressure behavior, and gas production trends. He also helped us optimize our workflow using CMOST, enabling us to efficiently refine our history matching and compositional simulation setup. Thanks to his expertise and the advanced capabilities of GEM and CMOST, we successfully completed our project and significantly improved our understanding of CO2-brine relative permeability as well as on the advanced coreflood simulation workflows.

CMG STARS gives us the platform to model complex thermal and chemically reactive systems with dynamic flows. We’ve used CMOST as a tool to quantify the potential production ranges spanning a set of interacting uncertainties for the reservoir conditions and ranges in the reactivity for the designed chemical reactions. It is highly impossible to find another platform that does this.
