I’m happy to share that I have passed FMI’s Chartered Financial Modeler (CFM) examination. I am proud to be among the newest cohort of global charter holders—and the first to earn the prestigious CFM designation in Austria. In short, this was one of the hardest examinations I have ever taken. Building on the strong foundation of the AFM exam, the CFM is a rigorous and demanding 4-hour, proctored, Excel-based exam, requiring candidates to solve two real-world financial modeling cases selected from twelve possible topics. I would like to sincerely thank Judith Singh, FCCA, CFM, FMVA®, FPAP® for her excellent model solutions, which were invaluable during my preparation, as well as Ian Schnoor, CFA, CFM and the entire FMI team for continuously advancing the content, platform, and brand. It is impressive to see how this credential has become the industry standard and continues to evolve. For anyone considering taking on this challenge, here is my honest preparation advice: Take it very seriously, regardless of your background. Plan at least four months of preparation with daily exposure to the content. Identify the “break-even points” in each case—almost every case includes at least one uniquely difficult formula or concept that must be fully understood and memorized for immediate application. Timing is critical and will likely be your biggest constraint. Learn the core building blocks by heart so you can apply them instantly within the case frameworks. Out of the three cases presented (two must be selected), there is often one that feels more familiar—solve this one in under two hours to free up time for the second case. Complete all platform cases at least twice. Track your experience, and in the final week focus on the most difficult cases, repeating them a third or even fourth time if necessary. I passed the final exam in my financial modeling journey and can officially call myself "Chartered Financial Modeler."#CFMaccredited When I joined the Financial Modeling Institute program in 2022, my approach shifted fundamentally. I moved away from the classic "EBITDA = Cashflow" shortcut toward building more rigorous models. Working capital dynamics, various debt structures, equity waterfalls, and proper tax forecasting became part of my toolkit. Debt and equity financing in particular turned into a core part of my daily work. Today, every financial model I build includes a full 3-statement structure (P&L, Cash Flow, Balance Sheet). Even for real estate and project finance transactions where many practitioners skip the balance sheet entirely. Yes, it drives some analysts nuts when they make updates and the balance sheet doesn't balance because something is linked incorrectly. But that's exactly the point. If your balance sheet doesn't balance, you have an error somewhere. Better to catch it than to hide it. To all the number crunchers out there, consider getting your accreditation through the FMI. And join some of the communities around financial modeling (FMI, Full Stack Modeller, Excel Summit). I learned a lot from other people, and it's cool to meet my YouTube idols in person.

Unforced errors occur when a player makes a mistake that was not forced by the opponent's good play. For example, if a player hits the ball into the net during a rally. This much has financial modeling in common with tennis. Schedules stand like Corinthian columns, the final form resembles an illuminated manuscript, ancient scribes wouldn't produce smoother rolls for scenarios. And then, cash turns negative, dividends get paid against losses, the balance sheet leans more than the Tower of Pisa. The ball rests at the bottom of the net. There are hundreds of hours of practice that lead to a 4-hours, proctored attempt to turn a one page case study and an empty spreadsheet into a dynamic 3-statements model, with little more than all the keyboard shortcuts muscle memory to fend off one curve ball after the next. I was lucky to have a number of excellent coaches, first and foremost Ian Schnoor, CFA, CFM at the Financial Modeling Institute (FMI) for his contribution to the discipline. Myles Arnott and Giles Male at Full Stack Modeller made sure I showed up for practice and Judith Singh, FCCA, CFM, FMVA®, FPAP® called all the outs in my drafts. Delighted to wake up to the news I've passed my Advanced Financial Modelling exam. I decided to do it because I do a lot of financial modelling but I'm entirely self taught and thought it would be good to check that I'm using best practice and get accredited. It's fair to say I didn't learn a lot of new Excel along the way, although it encouraged me to start using a few more useful shortcuts, as speed is very important! However, it was really useful to learn a set structure for debt / overdraft / cash modelling which I'll definitely use going forward, instead of coming up with something new each time I have to do a three statement model. I think the main thing that stuck with me though is the point that a financial model is a communication tool first and foremost, and it should answer specific questions. When I've made models before, I've thought I was being helpful by giving users the ability to change almost anything, but with hindsight this might be a bit overwhelming. Most end users aren't like me and probably don't want to fiddle with lots of variables. They'd like to see a couple of clear scenarios based on the key variables. This is the structure you're encouraged to build in the AFM and it will definitely influence future models. Now pondering the CFM!

I moved this exam twice! Completing the Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) exam in 3 hours and 15 minutes wasn’t just another certification milestone for me. It was a personal vote of confidence in my growth as a financial modeler. The journey wasn’t linear, work demand was hectic and so I shifted the sitting from July to October, and then to February. Not out of hesitation, but intention. I wasn’t interested in just passing. I wanted competence, the kind that shows up when you’re building models under real-world pressure. I remember a night that stretched to 4 a.m., building a model after a long demanding workday. There were moments during preparation when even meeting the 4‑hour exam mark felt out of reach. Over time, and after building 4 fully balanced models, that changed. My learnings followed me even away from my laptop, as I caught myself at various times auditing schedules, questioning calculations and advanced formulas, and thinking through model logic in my head. Exam day brought its own test of composure. At one point, my Microsoft Excel closed, causing me to lose part of the progress I had already made. After restarting the tool, I rebuilt the lost sections calmly and pushed on, eventually finishing the exam in 3 hours and 15 minutes. It's been a long and interesting ride, but beyond the exam itself, the process sharpened skills that now sit at the core of my work. I’m deeply grateful to God for grace, to family and accountability partners Opeyemi A., Chinwuba Okafor (AAT, QCA, AFM), Hikmat Omolaja Oluwadolapo Sobanjo that encouraged me and to David Brown, Oluwasegun Ifedi and the dbrownconsulting team, for the African Student Scholarship leverage and a rigorous, well‑structured course that went far beyond simply preparing for the AFM exam. Over the past few years, I’ve been building financial models across different contexts. From budgeting frameworks and DCF valuations to infrastructure and energy projects, one thing kept coming up: the gap between “a working model” and a model that can actually stand up to scrutiny. That’s what pushed me toward AFM. I wanted to sharpen how I think about: 1. Structuring models for real decision-making 2. Stress-testing assumptions under uncertainty 3. Linking operations, financing, and risk into one coherent story Going through the program forced me to slow down and be more deliberate. Less focus on just getting outputs, more focus on why the model behaves the way it does. Right now, I’m applying those skills in: 1. Building integrated models for capital-intensive projects 2. If you don't have a solid foundation, you won't know how to prompt effectively or even identify when something is wrong. And it does get things wrong confidently. So it's not about replacement. I once deleted my entire exam file… and still passed here's how😅 Few months ago, I joined a CFA webinar where David Brown spoke about Financial modelling & The African student scholarship by Financial Modeling Institute (FMI) with dbrownconsulting and it sparked my interest to pursue a Financial Modeling certification.Taking that step wasn’t easy. It meant pushing myself out of my comfort zone. The journey wasn’t without its challenges: late nights, moments of self-doubt, and the constant reminder to stay consistent. On exam day I mistakenly deleted my entire file while applying final touches. For a moment, I thought all the effort had gone to waste. Thankfully, the Institute’s live exam support team allowed me to lay my complaint, and I was able to recover and submit it on time. That experience made the success even sweeter. In year 2017, I was looking for an accreditation of my modeling skills and browsed through several sites and finally selected one that really gives independent accreditation, namely Financial Modeling Institute, in particular the Advanced Financial Modeller accreditation. I saw in it as a real value to tell people that you have reached a high level of expertise in financial modelling. Preparing for the AFM exam made me realise that a model is made for others to use and that models should be as per international standards. Today I am sharing my skills and know-how to working professionals through formal training. It is thanks to the accreditation of AFM that I told professionals that I am a qualified modeler. This wasn’t just another exam; it was hands down the toughest I’ve ever taken. A rigorous three-hour challenge that involved building a financial model completely from scratch. What made it even more intense was that I took this exam during my NYSC, balancing service responsibilities and study time. This achievement is a testament to the power of diligent study, practice over practice, and the determination to overcome every hurdle.
