What People Are Saying About The School of Climate Action Design

Kelley Yu

The outcomes of the program really exceeded my expectations

After doing Katie's behavior design, I felt very powerful.  I can actually get people to do things, and I know it works because I tested it out.

When I implemented my 7-day plant-based challenge, I had 30 people sign up and 15 people actually go through with the whole challenge, and people had a lot of fun. Especially the competition piece. I was amazed to see even the biggest meat-eaters so determined to get to the top of the leaderboard. I saw how powerful these simple tools are for behavior change.

That's when I realized – gamification works! Climate action can be fun, and that is exactly what we need to create change. With these new tools, I feel more hopeful about the future and feel like the world is my oyster. 😀

Fulfilling, inspiring and practical

For me, weaving and connecting different strategies into cohesive change frameworks was amazing. It removed a lot of the fear and gave me concrete steps for how to apply this work in the future.

Funnel design was completely new to me. Getting to explore things like landing pages and initial surveys was fascinating. We always expect people to “come to us” — but now I know how to be proactive!! I loved the experts you brought in. I can’t fit all of the ah-ha moments from those sessions into a sentence, but I’m pretty sure I had to turn my camera off a few times just to yell, “OH MY GOD. WOW.” at the ceiling.

Also, just personally, this has been such a fulfilling experience. I’ve been looking to learn about these topics for so much of my (short) career, and to find it all in one place has been incredible. Knowing that there are folks out there actually doing this work is also so meaningful — it gives me a path for the future.

Genuinely one of the best experiences I’ve had

This experience has stayed with me long after it ended. It’s been almost 6 months and I still find myself bringing it up in conversations about climate and behaviour change. The content was truly inspiring and insightful, sharing the most grounded, practical systems, frameworks and tips to move from climate awareness to climate action. Genuinely one of the best experiences I’ve had to learn how to drive climate ACTION!

The hard work is paying off!

Our journey with Katie was fantastic but, at the same time, daunting as she dissected what we'd developed from the ground up with a critical focus on improving long-term behaviour change. It required a healthy dose of humility as product designers to implement her recommendations, but the good news is the hard work is paying off.

We're seeing users get through installation and setting up the App on their phones faster, with fewer support requests. More devices installed correctly, more data uploaded, more savings, and more delighted users.

Katie is a world-class behavioural consultant. For anyone working in energy and water efficiency to drive behaviour change, Katie's Spotify podcast "How to save the world" is really worth a listen.

I absolutely loved it

The course was so interesting and so inspiring and so rich. We have these team check-ins every Monday, and every week I'd say, 'There's this thing I learned from Katie Patrick, this is what you need to know.' I have this tremendous desire to teach other people what I've learned, to help them have it in their own work.

Highly recommend Katie's Action School for anyone interested in sustainability change-making!

Katie Patrick is an expert on behavior change and breaks down complex topics in an easy (and fun!!) way. These workshops guide you through the steps to implement a program that actually gets people to change their behavior so that we can make climate action real.

It helped me see how behavior-change tools are like "ingredients in a recipe" we need to design, rather than hunting for the one silver bullet.

I particularly love Katie's recent newsletter exploring the intersection of systems change and individual action. This is key for our students to understand.

Invaluable to help me pitch major projects to government

I just did a pitch using your hero's journey for a funder. And it went so well. We got through to the next stage and now have 7 sites now composting on our programme :)

I feel extremely confident now. I can't even remember how I felt before the Action Design School. I feel like we are in the bud stage and nothing can stop the serious flowering that will be happening soon.

I so appreciate the Hello World site, and I can't wait to spend more time in there and keep learning.

Strongly Recommend, Very Challenging!

The course was very challenging, and it took me a lot longer to uncover what specifically I could do on Renourish Studio to shift designers to use circular design in their studios. However, Katie Patrick was amazing and spent so much time with all of us, guiding, inspiring, leading, and challenging. She provided great feedback on our initial ideas, pushing us toward one that would help create more effective behavior change. I highly recommend it and encourage you to apply to help promote more impactful climate action.

A systematic process to launch an impact initiative

When planning a project, there are a universe of things to consider to get everyone on board to make it grow well. The systematic process to help us review, assess, and connect with your audience that Action Design School offers has helped us enormously. Katie has done so much good work to get this course together.

I learned so much

Katie brings behavioral psychology, marketing, and funnels together into a practical system. Even mentoring a youth 'no-buy' campaign with a limited budget, I could apply the steps and see how they move people from knowing to doing. Compared to other courses I've taken, this kept me on track. There was real homework, the expert talks and recordings were invaluable, and the community was supportive.

Powerful insights

Re-evaluating my storytelling has been key to improving outcomes across my desired sustainability projects. Angling myself as the ‘mentor’ and not the ‘hero’ was crucial in this process.

Science-backed behavior change

Katie is a thought leader and game-changer. I booked an idea-storming call with her during the wireframing phase of a climate action platform. Her innovative approach and extensive knowledge of science-backed behavior change methods energized the design process and ultimately contributed to the development of a powerful tool that is now empowering users across the country.

Not your average course!

Katie was super supportive and there's a genuine desire to help everyone succeed. I have learnt so much that I think about on the daily, and my biggest learning was that there are opportunities for change at all stages.

Stellar Session

We brought Katie in to help us develop ideas to move all of our community members toward electrifying our houses. She helped provide both a conceptual framework for thinking about our project and many tangible possibilities for how we could move things forward. She was great.

Completely worked to engage our neighbors!

Katie's clear vision for sustainability street aligned with what I wanted to do with my family and kids. She had already thought through everything we could possibly need and had prepared a colourful helpful kit of resources to help make it fun and easy to engage neighbours on their next steps to net zero emissions.

Inspiring, thought-provoking, and data-driven

During my time as Chief Sustainability Officer of Dassault Systems, we invited Katie as a speaker in a sustainability learning series run for our global employee base. Her session was inspiring, using creative imagery and thought-provoking data to help teams imagine a different future, also emphasizing the role technology could play in enabling it. For a company specialized in virtual universes, the message was spot on and landed very well! Thanks again.

Extremely hands-on and concrete.

A must for people who want to make a difference in the world. It made a huge difference in the way I think about what really matters.

I work on a lot of projects related to climate and the environment, and I always come back to Katie's teachings when I feel that I'm being derailed or stuck. Highly recommended!

Meaningful impact through design, innovation, and environmental action

It was an absolute pleasure to host Katie Patrick at the QLab Think Tank (Germany) in 2021, where she delivered an online lecture that left a lasting impression on our interdisciplinary team of young professionals.

Her inspiring insights and innovative approach to environmental challenges became a cornerstone of our design sprint process. Katie’s ability to connect deeply with her audience while presenting actionable strategies ignited a renewed sense of purpose within our team of students from India, Spain, Mexico, and Brazil.

Her thought-provoking ideas were instrumental in shaping our challenge, “How might we save one million city trees through new technologies?” Katie brought valuable knowledge and instilled a sense of empowerment. She helped us realize that engaging people to save trees is possible and essential. Her energy still inspires us as we work towards implementing sustainable solutions for greener cities.

We wholeheartedly recommend Katie Patrick as a speaker, mentor, and advocate for those looking to create meaningful impact through design, innovation, and environmental action.

Fostering a love of a greener, more beautiful world

Katie did an excellent job working with the elementary school children in my classes. She presented captivating lessons on the importance of designing a more sustainable, green, and beautiful world. She employed creative and visual elements, making her messages come alive for the children.

Her materials were colorful and eye-catching, ensuring that all eyes were on her presentation and that the children were actively absorbing the information. Best of all, Katie's passion for the subject was evident throughout the lessons.

Beyond the classroom, Katie also led an after-school club that the children enjoyed. She is able to connect with students and foster their interest in sustainability👏🏼 I recommend hiring Katie for any engagement that involves educating young minds on environmental issues.

The #1 resource on environmental behavior change now

Katie's work is technically specific and full of genuinely actionable ideas, having set a new standard in this field that makes everything else look either uninspired or obsolete.

The core theme is "How does one motivate people, really?" showing systematic ways to tap into people's deepest emotions: which are the desire for meaning, for purpose, for community, even for joy. I.e. *not* the standard cliched environmental scare-mongering.

Anyone who works in the environmental field will benefit from this.

I think the way of giving kids rewards is a good idea since kids at my school always come and they do more environmental things since they get rewards.

I feel like when you give people rewards, for example, the Earth plushie, the kids will do it more because it feels good to get rewarded.

Incredibly well-researched. Katie does the boring deep reading of peer-reviewed journals and synthesizes the behaviors that best enact change for a worthy goal.

I found that all of these cognitive science tricks to making behavior change actually happen and measurable work in business and in other aspects of our personal lives. This podcast is incredibly valuable, as is Katie’s book.

A game-changer

Katie's presentation gave me a solid base to begin the challenging task of tracking change . . . having been turned down for a grant or two for this very reason (we didn't have the behavior change data the foundations wanted).

I hadn't understood how to even begin collecting this information in a meaningful way until I participated in this workshop.

A true force for change

I’ve always loved Katie’s enthusiasm. She is one of my engineering heroes and has grown to become a true force for change.

This remarkable book continues Katie’s amazing journey. It is easy to read, practical and full of ways for you to act, and help us survive in a world where the evidence of climate change and sustainability collapse can be frightening.

Katie’s enthusiasm shines from every page and fires hope in my grandchildren.

You can't help but be transformed

I was blown away by the gamification concepts Katie Patrick uses. She brings a fresh sense of play and perspective to tough, serious environmental topics. At the same time, her assertions make sense as she lays out her strategies and then proves them using game concepts.

This is a very well-thought-out, detailed presentation of the material. My sense of digital design is far from sophisticated and I was extremely impressed to see the many ways that data visualization may be brought to bear on environmental and other sorts of information that I was not aware of.

Captivating and implementable

My background is in software engineering, and although I've applied one or two of these gamification techniques in the past, I've never seen them all tied together in such a logical and repeatable design. The lessons are captivating, and move at a fast but comfortable pace.

Detailed and extremely well-thought-out

Maximizing measurable impact is one of the most important frontiers in the social impact profession right now, and Katie's workshop presents a detailed and well-thought-out process to follow to achieve that.

This is an important and timely resource for anyone wanting to do less talking change, and make real impact in the world.

Tremendous insights into the psychology of behavior change, backed up with research and real-world examples. I appreciate the positive approach: no brow-beating, guilt, or shame - only fun, effective, and uplifting.

As an environmental consultant working at the nexus of behavior science and technology, this book is a must have reference. Chapter by chapter, Katie Patrick draws the reader further on and builds a case for program management to reduce human impact on the planet. It's also inspiring for anybody that wants to find motivation to reduce their own impact on the environment.

As someone who has tried to make an impact through creative work in the past, Katies book was a well needed wakeup call. I fell headfirst into the "Value Action Gap" where education alone does not lead to measurable change. The lessons contained within are crucial. A critical and timely read for anyone working in impact related fields. Bravo.

My wife and I both work with early stage ventures (for & non-profit) and we really loved seeing this book (so much that we bought a second copy for the other office!). It's really visually inviting, engaging, and accessible. Gives you a lot of examples of what has worked (and what has failed) when faced with certain types of problems. Get this book!

While most design books focus on grand theory and paradigm shifting ideas, Katie goes a few steps further for the benefit of the reader, the end user, and of course the environment. With years of on the ground experience, she clearly knows that action makes “the impact” while great theory alone is not enough in today’s world that needs real behavioral change, not just more and more ways to reinvent click-bait. An indispensable tool and a very smart weapon in effectively communicating with your audience on a level that can actually drive behavioral change. A toolbox of sorts, that any designer or manager can use over and over again to build a future that drives real and tangible impact.

As always, Katie communicates in a no nonsense, positive and practical way on how best to approach a new future. She encourages you to question every idea you might have; what am I trying to influence with this concept? What do I want people to do? how do I want them to change in a way that will change the numbers? How do I identify those numbers? How can I measure the effect their action will have on my goal? If you can’t articulate these elements, why waste your time and others, simply keep moving forward until you can. She has given me the ability to recognise those fluent in god metrics, who have done the work, eliminated the ideas that won’t work and are pushing forward to make a difference in the world, and these are the people I want to align with.

I've worked in the environmental industry since 2002 and started teaching in the field at university in 2010. Based on my experience, this book can offer people interested in this topic helpful insights to improve their work. I like how the author includes lots of examples, visuals, and stories. If you are interested in gamification this book will really benefit you. I teach a course on environmental behavior change at the university and I have my students read this book for our class. You will thoroughly enjoy it!

Katie does an incredible job of introducing concepts in a way that naturally allows you to engage with them. I’m also a huge visual learner, so the presence of a lot of images made this a really enjoyable read for me. Everything needs to change in order to combat the climate crisis, and this book introduces and guides readers through some of the many ways they can take action. Highly recommend!

Amalgamates a broad swath of knowledge areas spurring creativity in interdisciplinary approaches to the challenge of how better to respect resources in their innate, limited nature by bridging the gap with expansive imagination. Better than the Harry Potter universe in its inclusivity, an openminded Bible for the scientifically minded looking to a bright future for all.

As a master's student in environmental sustainability so many books in the field are based on theory or case studies that have little to do with practical application. Katie's book is quite the opposite. Its simple straight-talk backed by the latest cognitive behavioral science for serious people who want to solve serious problems. A lot of the environmental problems we face today simply start by convincing the right people to do the right things and you simply cannot do that without the foundational knowledge outlined in this book. A must-read for anyone in research / design or marketing fields & attempting to implement real change within an organization or externally in the world.

Katie does a masterful job of illustrating the most common pitfall that environmental and social activists get trapped in: not focusing on the real and measurable impact of their attempts to improve the world. The simple concept of focusing on the data is present throughout the book. How to Save the World is broken up into 10 steps... a smart choice to make the process manageable and understandable. The paperback book is filled with rich illustrations, pictures, and diagrams. I am personally a visual learner so this feature was a selling point. If you are serious about trying to improve the world from an environmental or social standpoint, read this book.
