This past week I have been noticing more and more that my students are struggling to use AI in an attempt at "cheat coding" their way through my lessons. I decided it would be better to let them use AI in my class as an aid, but teach them how to use it responsibly to supplement their learning. MagicSchool AI has this awesome feature where you can see how the students in your classroom are using the platform. This made my life so much easier (rather than hiding behind them and peeking at their screens). Using AI is a skill and implementing this kind of skill building in our classrooms is a requirement, not a choice. I introduced my students to MagicSchool AI MagicStudent last week. To be honest, I was hesitant because I wasn't sure if my students would be overwhelmed with the variety of generators I deployed (8/39 student tools) or be confused with how to use them as idea accelerators and concept reinforcers. By the end of this particular project and the conversations with my students, my fears of how they would use and perceive it went away. Real use-case scenario: Students were to pick one or two energy sources that exist in the real world and decide on how to make them superpowers of fictional characters or ordinary objects. Then, they will create a story that addresses the essential questions that align with the state standard on energy. They chose their projects from a buffet of activities and could decide whether they wanted their final product to be physical on paper or digital with Canva. How did I introduce MagicStudent? I referenced MagicStudent as a brainstorming tool and students could utilize Raina for Students if they wanted to - I emphasized this to students. I walked my students through how to use Raina, how NOT to use Raina or any AI in general, how they should double-check all outputs, and to not let AI replace their individual, bright minds. How did the students use MagicStudent? They picked up on conversing with Raina rather quickly. They let her know if they didn't like an output and even adjusted their prompts on their own. When they liked an idea, they waved me down to see what I thought. There was a lot of chatter - in the best way. Students were excited to share their generated ideas with me and their peers. I talked them through their character and made sure they were confident their storyline would address the essential questions. My students used Raina and Idea Generator to select a project idea based on their subject interests: type of energy and character or object. Then, they ran with it and went wildly creative in Canva as they brought their ideas to LIFE. That's a whole different post. 😉 Here's an example I gave students created in Canva on a Humpback Whale with magnetic powers: Meet Magna, the Magno Humpback Whale. In short, she harnesses the magnetic energy supplied by Earth's churning, metallic interior and uses it on speedy ships that could harm her and her friends. Note: The ship looks like it's on fire, but Magna would not want to hurt humans, just a gentle repulsion to avoid harm to both parties. 1.
