A little about myself. I’ve worked in human resources (HR) for around 20 years so I do know a thing or three about creating, editing and reviewing resumes. Up until recently I was fine with redesigning my own resume by Googling what the recent resume trends are and updated descriptions from other job postings as needed. All that work takes time. My previous role was considered a Director or Senior Director in learning & development and my “next step” would be either a Vice/Senior Vice President or even Chief Learning Officer so I knew this time around I needed professional help with my resume. A little about my resume. Having around 20 years of experience my resume was already three pages long which is typically the standard maximum. I listed all 20 years because I wanted to show the progression and experience that expands that timeframe as future roles required 10+ years of experience. I did my fair share of research via Google then cross verified credentials via LinkedIn because there are way too many “career coaches” out there and knowing I would be paying good money I wanted to ensure only the best would be working on my new resume. I came across ResumeSpice and went to their website and chose the “Executive Package”. Yes, it was on the higher end in regards to pricing but for the positions I was applying for I considered it an investment. After submitting my request through their website I was contacted by Jessica Richardson to send her my then current resume and schedule a time to talk about what my goals were for this service. In addition to what was requested I provided additional information and links to roles I was looking to apply for so she could get a better idea how to best assist me. I also let her know that I wanted a complete “makeover” on my resume and let her work her “magic” since she was the resume professional. During our scheduled appointment Jessica had me walk through each current and past roles as well as the biggest projects I was involved in for each of them where significant added value was achieved. She took notes and asked clarifying questions so she fully understood each role and project. I felt confident she had what she needed to create a first draft. I fully expected to “red-line” a lot when I received my first draft. I was sent my first draft in less than a week and was a little shocked, not at what it was lacking, but that she hit the highpoint of each role in just a few bullets then added corresponding projects/achievements. I was very impressed with how it came out and only had a few other minor suggestions and requests that she listened to and incorporated. My package allowed for three revisions (including the first draft) and I only had to use two to get what I was looking for… then I started applying. Senior roles like the ones I was going for take time because the review and interview process is quite lengthy so while other roles may get their first interview right away I was realistic and knew it would take some time. A number of resume services are out there, so it was hard at first to decide on who would get my business. In the end, ResumeSpice won out, and I'll break down my review by the main interactions. 1) Free 15-minute phone consultation. I submitted my resume and got some good, upfront feedback from Camille. I adjusted my resume some (as I admittedly recognized that some of the pointers she made were things I thought about, but either wasn't sure about changing or how to change, exactly). It was solid for being free of charge, but it also made me want to use their paid services to get an even better resume out of it, since I still knew I'd need the help. 2) Website chat. I used their chat to ask some questions before actually pulling the trigger, including about why there is at least one 'career and resume writing' blog (first page of a Google search!) who gave them a pretty poor review. My initial thoughts: "Are all of these 5-star reviews bought, then? Maybe just by people who work there, or their family/friends? I know you can easily do that for some other 'reputable' review sites. I needed to know more. Why choose you over any other resume service? Plus you're more expensive!" In chat, Emily confirmed that the blogger had never used their services, so that review holds no credence. Yeah, reviews can be bought, but these are verified. Fair enough. Also, when I went back to re-read the negative review from an 'expert' source, it did have a weird spin to it, where even describing the interaction isn't even how ResumeSpice works! That set my mind more at ease... and then I was given a discount code if I wanted to pull the trigger (with no pressure at all, though). Okay, I'll do it. 3) Interview. When meeting for my interview, Sally patiently took the time (way more than the quoted 30-minute allotment) to truly ensure that my goal would be met: to create a strong, baseline resume that I could use for 2-3 different roles. She was able to extract out of me not just more of my core competencies (as I had many in my resume already), but also succinct ways of quantifying my strengths and experiences to tell the right (and honest) story. 4) The first pass review. I reviewed her first draft and notes, and agreed with most of the points in there. I also wanted to add some other things which I forgot to mention during the interview, and she took it all into consideration. At the end she gave me a few good ideas on how to tailor the resume for different applications that I didn't think of (thanks again, Sally). My resume now looks much more cohesive, has had an expert editor perfect it, and the outcome of our conversations (yes, there was a follow-up one) resulted in a resume that I feel much more confident in distributing. If you're on the fence to use a resume service at all, I'd say go for it. Invest in your career's future. If you're on the fence weighing which service to go with, I was there, too. Do your research, but take the 'expert' blog opinions (and sure, even reviews like mine) with a grain of salt. That's not to say that competitors are not good, but I know that with ResumeSpice I got what I paid for, and there is a simple reason ResumeSpice has as overwhelming and stellar of reviews as it does from real customers: they're legit.

What a great experience! I spoke to Jessica over the phone and she took it all in and put it together in a way that was succinct and focused.
