SANS Foundations course was a game-changer for me. The quality of the labs, videos, and audio was top-notch everything was clear, concise, and engaging. The hands-on labs were especially useful, allowing me to apply what I learned in real-time. One memorable instance was when I encountered a tricky issue at work. We had a security breach that seemed impossible to track. Thanks to the incident response techniques I learned from the course, I could quickly identify and mitigate the threat. It was a proud moment that showcased the real-world applicability of the skills I gained. I never stop learning. Every new skill I acquire is a step closer to my dreams. The effort I put in today will shape my success tomorrow. I keep pushing forward and remind myself that the journey is as important as the destination.

The course material is top notch and relevant. I go from despising Python, to actually not despising it and wanting to learn more. I have tried a couple other learning platforms and none of them have presented the material with the quality of this platform.

The course is very enlightening. Very interesting to learn stuff from the basics and James explains the concepts really great! Labs are concise enough and good audio quality. One interesting thing I learned and immediately applied was the concept of Mesh networks.. James talked about mesh networks and devices in the networking module in a walk through configuration. I was curious to know more about them and i did some research. Interestingly for me, I had the exact same hardware in the block (Ubiquity Unify access points). Turns out I was using them wrongly. I had given each access point an unique SSID. I learnt from the course how mesh devices work. I immediately unified the SSIDs of my access points and this significantly improved Wifi distribution in the block. And of-course the approach to Info-sec. Really amazing.

The SANS foundational course shows you just how much you miss when going with other vendors such as EC-Council and CompTIA. The SANS Foundations course gives you a well-rounded walkthrough of many topics while providing real work scenarios and demonstrations to supplement their material. This is something lacking in parallel courses that I have taken; it becomes a multiple-choice memorization game when information systems and cyber security should be built around hands on activities relating to real-life experiences. I think it's better to hear James discussing how he did directory transversal with unicode chars despite their being security controls on the IOT device to prevent this, versus seeing /../../ as an A, B or C choice test and picking it. SANS delivers cyber related topics as it is presented in life beyond the book, and this is something other vendors mistakenly do not put any stock in. To give some background to a reader my opinion comes from having 7 certifications through CompTIA, 1 through Microsoft and 1 through EC-Council / none at the moment through SANS.

This course has helped me a lot by teaching me the foundations of cybersecurity. At the beginning, I was just drifting around Tryhackme rooms looking for a good place to learn, and then I found it. SANS has helped me by showing me how things work, not just how things are exploitied, and through this I have gotten better at CTFs at a pace that no Tryhackme room could match.

The SANS Foundation to Cybersecurity Course is extremely amazing. I was able to reinforce all the Cybersecurity skills/tools that I have learned over the years and in college. The content, visual, and audio is extremely valuable. The Labs played a crucial role in stabilizing and reinforcing the curriculum you learn about by having hands on experience with the content.

I am currently an IT manager at a University. The University offered vouchers for SANS training, and I jumped at the opportunity. My background is not in IT. I wanted a foundational course to increase my knowledge and help me more easily understand the content of the discussions I was having with my teams. This course offers a lot of information, and I feel like I'm walking away with a lot of knowledge that will improve my effectiveness in my role. The course material is dense at times, but it is laid out well and varied. You can listen to the audio of the text. There are videos. The interactive labs are well-guided (for the most part) and fun. Overall, I am happy I signed up for this course. I also want to shout out the SANS team. When I first signed up for the course, I didn't anticipate anything getting in the way of my studies. That changed fairly quickly (picture: an IT reorg and layoffs). I asked the SANS team for an extension due to these circumstances. They generously provided one and I had the time I needed to get through the material. I am very appreciative.

I have an IT background and I am aware of many concepts that are part of this program. Even though I am aware of topics, this course has helped me to brush up on my understanding, and I feel more confident in defining those concepts. Also, I have come across new learning related to security, which has inspired me to choose SOC as my future goal. Furthermore, the labs and videos are well structured and it's easy to apply those concepts in the real world.

The opportunity to study at SANS has been a incredible journey. I was very fortunate to not only enter into the Cyber Security field; but also, continue developing my skills with SANS. The level of instruction and follow up from the faculty is absolutely incredible. There is something to say about the feeling one gets after putting in long hours and hard work. Having that hard work pay off in a noticeable manor for me has been motivational in my pursuit to specialize and to continue to invest in my education and future. This course is challenging, and the applied labs help build confidence and experience.

SANS has helped me discover my passion for cybersecurity as a high school sophomore. I've always had an interest in computer science and SANS helped me find a niche in computer science. The quality of the labs, videos, and audios allowed me to learn well-crafted cybersecurity topics on my schedule. The many aspects of cybersecurity such as programming, forensics, and web manipulation has all helped me narrow down my search for what I intend to major in college.

I've always struggled with the programming side of cybersecurity, as my college only offered python for business type functions, and didn't really teach much more than the basics. When James was teaching how to write a basic TCP port scanner, it excited me because I was using programming for cybersecurity. I was so enthused that I researched how to make a port scanner for UDP ports and wrote my own UDP port scanner. This course has helped me immensely in that it has taught me a lot of things we didn't cover in school.

Absolutely incredible course. I already hold the CompTIA trifecta of A+, Network+ and Security+ and have some experience under my belt in cyber security. The SEC275 is THE BEST course I have ever studied. It combines all knowledge from the CompTIA I hold and expands massively, even though it is only a foundations course. I honestly cannot express this enough how important this course is in shaping people's perspective in the industry. James is a FANTASTIC course instructor and I hope to have ones like him in the future. The SEC275 reminded me the importance of fundamentals, taught me new things, expanded my knowledge and brought confidence. The quality and speed of the labs is incredible, video and audio alike.

The SANS Foundations course serves up exactly what its name says: a terrific foundation to build on in the field of cybersecurity. The course seemed almost overly broad at first but as I worked my way through each of the modules, I soon began to understand how the different concepts weave together to build a picture of the security world. Many base courses don't go beyond mere side references to Python (and don't even mention C, assembly, or debuggers) but this course shows the new student exactly why learning how these languages provides much deeper insight to cybersecurity. Other topics covered were a similar experience for me. Even as just a beginner finishing this course, I can now read articles about the latest flaws and exploits and am pleasantly surprised to see that I can follow along with at least a minimal understanding (as an example a new vulnerability was just revealed regarding the prefetch process in a particular manufacturer's chips that would enable a skilled attacker to decrypt or view sensitive data. Prior to this course, I would wonder what that meant but now I having an introduction to CPU registers in the Advanced Hardware module of the course, I can somewhat see what the researchers are talking about). The labs function directly in your browser and while I redid many of them on a local virtual machine for a better understanding and more practice, it was extremely helpful to have this functionality built in to the course. The Foundations platform itself is also extremely user friendly to a new student who may not understand right away how exactly to set up a home lab, virtual machines, or run containers. By the end of the course, a student has basic working knowledge of these concepts reinforced by hands on practice in the labs that now enable the student to embark on the rest of their cybersecurity education. A big thanks to James and the rest of the Foundations team, I am looking forward to future courses at SANS knowing I am better prepared to handle those concepts.

I’m somewhat already experienced with the fundamentals of IT. The GFACT course I’m taking gaves a different to perspective at the fundamentals on a security detail wise. It was interesting to learn about subjects which I’m unfamiliar with like SQL and email protocols.

Since day 1 of course I've been learning so so much! I love how every module is divided by sections, even if contents overlaps you are learning more in depth from a concept you heard the first time. Incremental learning of concepts. One of the great things as user is having a website with great ux experience, overall, the course I'm currently taking SEC 275, excels in video quality, audio, labs! So far, I've learned to install Virtual Machine, learn more in depth about linux, different types of servers and even setting up basic email server. Additionally, starting to play with a SQL database sample using CLI. I haven't finished the course yet, but so far, i've been engaged since day one! And the upcoming topics have me even more excited: python and sql in depth!! I looking forward to continue learning and growing!

I know I'm asked to just talk about my experience with this particular course only, but I prefer to talk about my journey and how I got to taking the course, and the many struggles I've had on the way. About two years before I began my scholarship, I was first introduced to the world of Computer Science through my Introduction to Computer Science class in school. Prior to this class, I tended to have a lot of excitement when it came to learning about computers, so I knew that I had an interest in them, but I never got to actually introducing myself to programming. First day of class, the teacher started by introducing us to an online IDE, java, variables, binary numbers, etc. I felt really lost, as if I don't even know how computers worked anymore, but there was also this feeling of interest and excitement because I felt like I was enjoying what I was doing. I started feeling at home when I came to programming. I also had this friend at the time, who I would call and expert in computer science (and I still do. I have no idea he was able to teach himself everything he's knowledgable of in this field). He started talking in a language that I felt like I wasn't understanding and whenever he got the chance, he would always make his submission to assignments 10x more advanced. I felt like I was behind, so right when I got home, I started following java tutorials and started getting ahead of my class with what we were learning. After I got a little comfortable with my skills, I went into searching about some of my interests in programming, which at the time was app development. I thought of the most basic app I can make, so I made a calculator app in java. I was so focused on this project to the point where I would procrastinate a lot of my assignments because I spent too much time focused on creating my app. After a couple months, I successfully finished my calculator app. While there are some minor flaws with how it worked compared to other calculators, I'm still proud on what I was able to create at the time. Fastforward one year, I entered the AP Computer Science A and Fundamentals of Cybersecurity classes in my school. AP CSA went a little more further with java and Cybersecurity taught me a little about Linux and commands, but not that much. Later, I found out about a group in my school that started teaching kids how to program at my local library. I was interested in joining because it was around that point in time when I wanted to get young kids introduced to computer science so that they can excel in it a lot more than I did when they grow older. However, in order to join I was required to pass the programming interview. Looking back at this, I seriously think that there was no point in having such a hard interview as this one or even having an interview at all to join because during the experience of teaching others, you're also relearning the information yourself which makes it a win-win. I tried the interview twice, but unfortunately, I did not pass and I was actually formally criticized indirectly by my interviewee that "[I] should improve on making programs that ACTUALLY WORK." Me, a person who created a whole calculator app, took on multiple large programming projects, and having a huge inspiration for teaching others how to program was rejected because I "wasn't able to" make programs that actually work. I was furious at the time and it created many mental health problems for me because I started doubting myself a lot, saying I wasn't good enough. Earlier in the year, my computer science teacher shared a subscription to an organization called Cyberstart America, where you have to complete as many cybersecurity challenges as you can to gain points. At first, I didn't think much of it at the time, but when I tried it, it was actually very fun and satisfying whenever I completed each challenge with that green banner popping up in the corner. I continued playing through the challenges until I found out that Cyberstart was offering a full $3000 scholarship for a SANS Foundation course to people who reached the top 1000 leaderboard on Cyberstart. I was very motivated to keep going, so I started crunching a lot of challenges to gain as many points as I could. When April came around, I applied for the scholarship and was accepted to take the program over the summer, with an exam from GIAC at the end. I was super excited when I found out that I was accepted. Once I finished school, I started the course right away and each video made me even hungier to learn more from the next. I loved the lab environments, the format of the text, and especially the quality of the videos. Everything seemed to fit perfectly together with the styling and the coloring. Since I had a great amount of experience in Computer Science at that point, it made it very easy for me to understand the information at the beginning. However, I had a lot of struggle with managing my time with the scholarship because I was traveling a lot and didn't always have internet, so I was delayed in my education multiple times throughout summer. A concept that I struggled to learn in this course had to do with networking. It was due to the amount of protocols there are when dealing with networking. Even though I feel like the topic is very easy for me now, before I had a lot of trouble with all the protocols whether it was mixing my knowledge of two of them together or remembering the general purpose of any one of them. Once I started to researching about them a little more, I found out how easy the concept was and was able to put flags for myself to help me remember what each one does. This was one of the best experiences I've ever had with any course I've learned, and I would love to complete another one again to improve my skills even more, whether if it is in cyber security or computer science in general. Today, I was able to pass my GIAC/GFACT examination during my junior year of high school and nowadays, I have no care in the world of what my former interviewee thinks of me or my skills, he has no right to judge me because he doesn't even know me. I'm now very skilled in the true fundamentals of cyber security and will be looking to improve and possibly obtain an internship with this certificate that I have achieved. I have actually gained an online job over the summer where I manage a small business' website, and services, and guide other employees through using the technology (I'm basically the IT of the business). Thank you so much James Lyne for this opportunity. I really appreciate you considering all the future cyber security and computer science specialists and giving all of us a chance to prove ourselves with our skills at a very young age.

I found SANS Foundation course is the best place to start no matter you have IT background or not. There are loads of examples from beginner to intermediate level. Personally, this course is a refresher of all the things that I have learned decades ago in the university. It is also very easy to digest considering almost all the modules has audio version (so you can listen while doing other work) or watch the video examples for better clarity.

i've learned new things with the SANS foundation course like Linux, Python & SQL. if someone is planning to continue in more courses in depth with SANS this course defiantly will be related to the advanced courses. when i studied SEC401 & SEC504 i've been Alloway returning back to the foundation to review some important aspects that been thought on those courses. this material will be always like a reference that will be used in your future studies as well as in your career. & the index that i've built when i was studying foundation, this index i've used it in both SEC401 & SEC504 exams & it was useful.

SANS Foundations has been an amazing refresher for the basics. Going through each module, I was able to get a better understanding of some of the material I already knew and learned some new stuff along the way. The videos were very detailed with setup demonstrations and helping you fully understand the material. The labs were a nice added touch adding the practicality of what your learning and giving you a break with some hands-on exercises. Overall, SANS Foundations is a great course and I look forward to the next SANS course I take.

James Lyne's excitement for the course material can keep any student on task and focused. It is truly amazing to watch him apply the concepts that I've only had the opportunity to read about, during many of his video demonstrations. I have a much firmer understanding on how computers, technology and security must work together, thanks to this phenomenal course.

I think the SANS foundations course is probably the pinnacle of what online school/learning can be. Even though I was already employed as a Network Admin and had a strong grasp of most IT fundamentals, I found myself challenged in areas I hadn't explored before, and overall learned a lot of information that has helped me in my career ever since.

As someone that is jumping into the cybersecurity industry with zero experience, The SANS Foundations course was an exceptional introduction. The course, led by James Lyne, a titan within the industry, truly gave me the critical foundations needed to move onto the next course within my program. The labs, videos, text, and audio provide you with a diverse set of learning channels which appeals to multiple learning styles. Now going into the GSEC course and exam, I have the confidence that the foundations have set the stage to not only complete my program at SANS but also have a rewarding career within the cybersecurity industry. I cannot recommend this course and program enough! Thank you James and SANS for the support and masterful course.

I did not have a traditional pathway into cybersecurity, or even tech. I went to a bootcamp and got some certifications before entering my first job. The SANS Foundations course helped solidify some of the essential material I had a weak grasp on, and provided plenty of new information that I continue to use in my job. I mostly appreciated the material that helped me understand my cybersecurity knowledge from the perspective of a real-world, enterprise environment.

The SANS Foundations course has helped me establish the fundamental skills needed as an aspiring information security professional. Coming into this course I had just finished a two year program in software development and information technology. It is great how much Foundations has taught me with consideration to how little overlap there is with that previous college experience. This class is technical and all of the material is relevant to the modern technologist. There is good production value in the video and audio. Learning from Mr. Lyne is easy as he is a qualified subject matter expert. The labs are well architected and run inside a neat virtualized environment in the browser. You have the opportunity to get your hands on many problems and tools to solidify the concepts learned. Overall they did a great job with the site’s user experience. Speaking as someone looking to get into the cybersecurity field, it may be tempting to jump right into the flashy high level tools and techniques however I would suggest that you start from the ground up. Reaching a level of sophistication requires that you have the fundamentals first. Foundations has shown me the little details that may have been overlooked at other schools while going deep in an array of subjects. There is a wealth of practical knowledge in SANS Foundations that has enabled me as a student.

I feel that SANS Foundations provides an excellent selection of topics that are a solid core for more cyber security study and work. Although I'm just finishing up a cybersecurity degree at another university, I still found this course to be most rewarding. The demos setting students up to do their own practice with the various types of servers or getting to know gdb or getting introduced to shellcode stand out especially. I also loved the intro to python, the info on setting up custom shell environments for productivity, and the intro to RAM, C, shellcode exploits, etc. I'm amazed how much was covered, how well everything was covered, and how comfortable I felt afterwards trying out a lot more on my own, despite having felt some hesitancy about some of these topics previously. Hats off to the creators and maintainers of this terrific course. Can't wait to dig even deeper into the SANS curriculum.

Hats off to the creators and maintainers of this terrific course. Can't wait to dig even deeper into the SANS curriculum.

SANS Foundations gave me a solid understanding of cybersecurity core concepts. It whet my appetite - I'm ready to dive deep and study even more!

Foundations has covered topics that weren’t introduced at my time in college while still building on that previous experience. This is coming from a two year software development program that teaches: Java, SQL, web dev, operating systems, networking, and other technologies. Even with that technical experience, most of the content was brand new to me. Foundations is great because it establishes the fundamentals. Before we weren’t even taught the basics like logic, data representation and manipulation. My Linux skills have levelled up. I’ll leave this course with an awesome Ubuntu VM :P Countless tools, all those servers, a customized command line, passwordless ssh connection, gdb, and a Kali docker inside Ubuntu. Just to name a few. Like what? 😂 Doing all of this with an infosec mindset is mind opening. Seeing potential vulnerabilities and techniques. Covering reconnaissance, forensics, and encryption. Taking the defensive and offensive approaches. I am about 90% through the web content. The course is looking like it finishes as strong as it started. Thank you,

This is the first platform I've used for an online course that hasn't been unbelievably frustrating and clunky. I've been loving the course so far and one suggestion I could offer is to maybe add a challenge assignment at the end of lessons for students who want to experiment with what's been taught. For example in the Database Server lesson, a challenge you could offer could be: "Set up a MySql server on your own computer following the best security practices and construct tables using the SQL CLI verbs containing these example values. " I know that students can always just follow along with the demo video to get hands on experience but I feel that this way makes it more challenging and memorable.
