First, let me say that I consider it a privilege to convey my experience with Toby Rice. My journey with aviation started in the 80’s & I soloed at Murfreesboro airport May 29, 1987. The week afterwards I was transferred to Ohio & put my training on hold. It turned out to be a 29 year hold. I picked back up in 2017 & that’s when I met Toby who was training for his private along with me. I think we soloed around the same time and then Toby ran off and left me. It seemed like every week he would stop by my hangar and tell me he’d passed another rating! We became friends as we both had the common love of aviation. Toby has been an inspiration to me as a pilot, but even more as a Christian and a true friend. We’ve flown a lot together and he keeps me current and on my toes. Fly High Toby! Toby has been my go-to flight instructor for the past 5 years. While I’ve been flying more than 30 years, Toby is the BEST instructor. We do instrument proficiency work, basics including stabilized approaches, emergency drills, IFR work, and all the other important areas that keep me sharp. He makes me a better pilot every time we fly. Toby does a great job making sure our instruction time together is efficient (always comes with a plan based on things we have previously discussed), and we de-brief after the flight and discuss my piloting strengths and areas for improvement. Toby is a constant - he’s not looking for his next piloting gig and is reliable and dependable as an instructor who will help you achieve your flying goals.

Before working with Toby, I was anxious like an 8 outta 10 and if I saw clouds or any kinda weather, I’d cancel. I didn’t have a real process and I was always second guessing myself. After 3 days, my anxiety dropped by more than half, my planning confidence doubled, and my emergency confidence tripled. I started working on my pilot's license in 1999. Life happened but I recently started getting lessons again. I had a couple instructors prior to contacting Toby. The difference between the teaching styles was a huge factor in my understanding and comfort with my new piloting skills. Toby really understands how his students see the lessons and offers insights and techniques that make the information easy to absorb and retain. When I purchased my current airplane, Toby was my first choice when I wanted to get transition training so I could fully understand and fly my aircraft safely.

Toby's AQP flight review is the best safety training and new private pilot can do. Full stop. It was a rather grueling two days, but I finished a far better pilot than when I came in. We didn't talk theory, he showed me tons of practical ways to keep from dying in an airplane and then made me fly them. If your goal is to just pass the test or do the minimum, don't come to Toby. If you want to be a better, safer pilot then he is "the guy"!

Being a low time tail dragger pilot, I needed an instructor to help me build confidence in landing my Sportsman TD. Toby is one of the very few instructors in the area qualified in TD instruction. Toby is not only an excellent pilot, his insights as an instructor are amazing. He knows how to convey his wealth of knowledge and ability to his students and his passion for teaching and aviation in general is off the chart. As a student, i would’ve LOVED having Toby at my disposal from the start. As a CFII student, having Toby (and the Mastermind hive) at my disposal, is worth the cost when you factor in $50+/hr grounds or $100+/hr flights. Toby (and the hive admins) teach in a way that truly captures leadership: he’s there with you, sharing what he’s been taught and passing knowledge on, in a manner that isn’t degrading or hurtful. Even better, IFR flying becomes fun because you get to see the results from the time Toby has devoted to impart his IFR knowledge. Doesn’t matter if it’s approaches (and the types), departures, Arc’s, VOR’s, holds, regulations, he knows it, and wants you to also.

The moment I found Toby's social media page explaining a lot about how to brief approaches, how and when to activate approaches or suspend, when to set timers for holds or enter into a hold, I feel that it was a blessing given to me to prepare for my IFR checkride that's coming up in a few months. Without Toby and his IFR Mastermind program, I probably would have struggled on this more and cannot wait to learn more as I continue my training for IFR.

In the short time following Toby's insta and now joining this IFR Mastery group, I've learned more information for a much cheaper price than I ever had versus spending $50/hr on ground lessons with my instructors at my flight school. To Have a thorough understanding of the concepts of instrument flying. Some of new things I learned, that we can see things in a different way apart from conventional. The coaching is great, comprehensive, and easy to go across for newbies as well. The course definitely improves the proficiency and skills in actual flying by more of applied knowledge.
