I have been following 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner on LinkedIn for a while now and always enjoy reading his insights. He's collated them into a beautiful and generous book that should be essential reading for anyone who writes for a living. I particularly love how he draws from different storytelling disciplines, including and beyond advertising, to present his 'micro-lessons' on copywriting, taking inspiration from literature, film, photography, art, and touching life events. Make sure you get yourself a copy! …more

This book is doing the rounds at Writers Australia HQ and it's a must-read - even if you don't think of yourself as a writer. Because it's more than a way of writing, it's a way of being. One new habit I'm putting to work right now: being disciplined about writing down ideas the minute they arrive. Eddie calls it a "form of writing insurance." Thanks 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner for turning all those ideas into your Very Good Copy book, and sharing it with the world. #copywritingtips #writingideas #verygoodcopy

This is the story of Red Bull's masterclass in rebranding. Taken from 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's incredible new book. In 1984, Dietrich Mateschitz was in Thailand and tried an 'energy tonic' full of sugar, caffeine and taurine used by the working class to stay productive and alert during work. Thick and medicine-like, it was for a purpose, not pleasure. Back in Europe, Mateschitz was up against it. The 'truly vile' drink wasn't getting any traction. So he changed things up: - The packaging. The can was short and thin, unlike other drinks. - The tagline. 'Red Bull gives you wiiings' was memorable and gave a promise. - The price. Each can was twice the price of a Coke or a Sprite or a Pepsi. This made Red Bull an expensive, but functional alternative. He also partnered with The Dolomitenmann, 'the world's toughest race'. Now, fans tuning into extreme sports were seeing the infamous charging bulls everywhere they looked. Red Bull was the drink for the thrill-seekers, the energetic, the brave. It wasn't just a drink. It was a tool. Today, it's easy to forget that Red Bull is even a drink. That's the Mateschitz effect. P.S. Read 🇺🇦 Eddie's book. I've at least a dozen more ideas inspired by its wisdom. Thank you, Eddie. #Copywriting #Formula1 #Motorsport #RedBull

I'm on holiday, with no LinkedIn. This is an automated post. So don't go expecting a reply or anything, alright? That's right, I'm having a lovely week with the family. Beaches and bikes and adventures and one dead fancy meal. Brilliant. This is what I've taken with me. Not EVERYTHING I've taken, obviously. I have clean pants and stuff too. 1 x notebook (I want to try and write a short story in the week I'm away) 1 x spare notebook (just in case) 1 x sketchbook (I want to draw more, so I'm gonna try and build a habit) Lots x pens and pencils 1 x Kindle with books downloaded including Birnham Wood by Eleanor Catton and The Shithead (advance copy because I'm fancy) by Tim Grahl 1 x copy of Very Good Copy by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner Several x more books because books 1 x big headphones 1 x spare headphones 1 x phone with a load of stuff downloaded on Tidal including as much Anna Erhard as I can find 1 x copy of the latest Singletrack magazine which arrived just in time 1 x camera with vintage Zenit lens for arty blur Have I forgotten anything important? I mean it's too late now, I'm already there. But still. [Image shows several of the objects mentioned above including Very Good Copy, headphones, Kindle and notebook. Free Conversion Copywriting Tips For Everyone

I'm only about halfway through 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's book... ... and it's arguably the best business/advertising book I've ever read. I know, there are a ton of classics out there. But hear me out... I loved reading Claude Hopkins I loved reading David Ogilvy I loved reading Eugene Schwartz I loved reading Draper Daniels I loved reading Leo Burnett I loved reading Drayton Bird and while they were the GOATs... Much (or at least some) of their advice was dated. 95% of the principles stand, but times have changed. VeryGoodCopy was made for today's copywriter. It's simple. It's clear. It references pop culture. Sometimes it gets personal. It's... actually poetic. So no, this isn't your "m'yeah, see" kinda ad book. And best of all, it addresses questions you most likely ponder. - AI - Productivity - Creativity and so much more... ... all wrapped up in 207 tight micro-lessons. My wife doesn't even work in advertising, and I still recommended it to her. If it can keep my ADHD brain from wandering, I can only imagine what his work looks like. Pick it up: shorturl.at/K0gFH Shout out to legend Drayton Bird for the foreword. #Copywriting #Branding #Advertising #DirectResponse #SaaS ________________________________________________________________________________ I'm Mike — the go-to conversion copywriter for SaaS and service-based brands. Would you say I'm one of the 1% Nigerian Copywriters to OWN a copy? . . . When I got this yesterday... It felt like I had won a million dollars 💸. I have been following 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner for over 2 years now. And if you're on his email list... You would agree with me... He's the best storytelling copywriter I've seen. When he announced he was writing a book... I didn't think twice to join the wait list. And to think my favorite A-LIST copywriter... Kim Krause Schwalm endorsed it... I just knew it's a MUST for me to have mine. And the best part? I got it as a birthday gift from my brother... Collin L. 🔥 I can't to start reading 💃 Wooooooooooooo 🥳 P.S. My goal is to be INSANELY GOOD in my skill. It's why I don't joke with any opportunities to learn. I know I have to serve my clients and give them the best... and one of the best ways to do that is to... HONE MY SKILL! 🔥 What do you think? …more

🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner you’ve upended my entire afternoon and I’ve got zero work done! My Amazon driver dropped this through the letterbox mid morning. I stopped for lunch, opened my mail and started flicking through my latest purchase before heading back to work. Hours later and I’m still stood at my breakfast bar reading ‘just one more chapter’ getting absolutely no work done. Your LinkedIn posts are always entertaining, your blog is blimmin’ brilliant, but this book is something else entirely 👏👏👏 This book is so good I even forgive you for making me work late tonight to play catch up 😜 …more

When I graduated from high school, a school district leader gave me a beautiful pen. Her graduation card said, “Always remember the pen is mightier than the sword.” Truth! Words are so powerful and how we write can change everything. Confession: I use AI almost every day for work. To help me brainstorm, generate a draft or edit. It helps me work smarter and faster with a small team and limited resources. But it’s so important to maintain the integrity of the written word. And I need to continue working those muscles. After my feed was full of great reviews, I just received my copy of #verygoodcopy by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner. So far, can’t put it down. I’ll be back with some takeaways later on. …more

…more Show translation

Helping nonprofits discover donations in their email list

I get paid $$$$ to write captivating stories that convert people into donors. But the truth is… Even if I write the most EFFECTIVE copy on the planet for your nonprofit… If your audience is ice-cold - the message will fall flat and you’ll struggle to reach your fundraising goals.🧊🥶❄️ Recently, I’ve been loving 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner new book Very Good Copy (highly recommend!). A third of the way through the book he breaks down what you need to make a campaign successful: 👉 40% audience (your email & mailing list + social following) 👉 40% offer 👉 20% creative The good news is that if the audience OR the offer is off, but the creative is good - you still have somewhat of a shot. The bad news that if the audience AND offer is weak - it’s going to be an uphill battle to reaching your fundraising goals. Thats why even as a copywriter, I help and teach nonprofits about audience building and engagement. 🔥 👉 I’m a big fan of what I call The Warm Up Phase. In tomorrrows newsletter, I’m going to share 5 ways to get your donor’s to ENGAGE with your content over the next 60 days before the end-of-year fundraising season really begins. Why do you want them to practice engaging now? Because if they aren’t opening, clicking and replying to your nonprofit’s emails and other content now - they definitely won’t when they see a donate button. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Want it delivered to your inbox? See below.

When asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" my answers would invariably include "writer" and "teacher" ... Later I got interested in psychology, specifically in the context of learning, creating and decision-making. I guess, it doesn't come as a surprise then that I'm fascinated by the art of copywriting and consider myself a passionate and eternal student - for the benefit of my own business AND to support my clients. It's a valuable craft to cultivate for anyone in business. After all, it doesn't matter how good your product or service is if you can't communicate its value to the right people, and inspire them to take action. So I pay attention to copywriters who manage to catch and hold my attention, whose words I gobble up like a kid a cone of ice cream on the beach. 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner falls into that category for me. His writing sparked my curiosity on LinkedIn, I subscribed to his blog and grabbed a copy of his new book the moment it came out (I got the Kindle version so I had to get a bit creative for the pic 😛) It's everything I hoped it to be and more. If you enjoy the kind of writing that hooks you in and breaks your mind open in unexpected ways, you'll love "Very Good Copy". I'll pop the link in the comments. You can thank me (well, Eddie Shleyner) later 💃😊 …more

If you enjoy the kind of writing that hooks you in and breaks your mind open in unexpected ways, you'll love "Very Good Copy". I'll pop the link in the comments. You can thank me (well, Eddie Shleyner) later 💃😊 …more

Content is King—but not all content reigns supreme. In the past twelve months at ChatMetrics, I've ventured deep into the vast, and often overwhelming yet consistently amazing world of marketing. It's a challenging landscape; I've found mastery elusive, so I focused on one particular aspect to start. Effective copy seemed the hardest part, especially for a non-seasoned copywriter like me. I knew I had to sharpen this skill. That’s when I stumbled upon Eddie Shleyner’s work—a name synonymous with captivating, educational copy. When Eddie announced the pre-launch of his latest book, I jumped on the waitlist with great anticipation. And let me tell you, this book is a goldmine. Eddie’s writing doesn’t just share tips—it delivers transformative insights. Each story, every example, they all work together to make his advice truly sink in. It’s like a masterclass in copywriting, one that leaves you both enlightened and eager to apply what you've learned. I’ve filled pages upon pages of my yellow legal pad with notes, not because I fear forgetting, but because the wisdom in this book is worth capturing. It’s an enjoyable, highly informative read that I can’t recommend enough to anyone thirsty for copywriting knowledge. So, if you're serious about mastering the art of copy, Eddie’s book is a must-read. On slowing down and noticing: Cybersecurity moves fast. Marketing moves fast. I don't have to tell you what happens when you work in cybersecurity marketing. But a couple weeks ago, my otherwise hyper-speed world slowed down for a solid 5.5 days. Brutal straight-line winds swept through Omaha. They downed thousands of trees and left nearly 220,000 people without power. Which also meant no A/C in 100+ August heat. To escape it, my husband and I practically lived in our stuffy basement, but it never got cooler than 85 degrees in our house. On day 3 of this outage, I was fed up with the basement and went outside, which was only slightly atrocious (at least there was a breeze). I flung open a lawn chair, in the shade just outside our garage, and I cracked open 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's new book. I read the whole thing, cover to cover. All 207 lessons. One afternoon. ** To preface this, I also both joined the waitlist and ordered the book seconds after Eddie sent email updates, because I've followed VGC for a long time, and I love his micro-lessons. But back to the story. ** As my eyes raced over the pages, I started to slow down. Between lessons, I'd look up. And as I did, I started noticing more things: - The steady thrum of a generator down the block. - The leaves rustling in our damaged maple tree. - A small beetle scuttling across the sidewalk. But it wasn't all external. No, I noticed how much joy taking this moment brought me. Slowing down. Taking a beat. Thinking. - About writing. Because of the incredible book I was reading. - About love. Because my husband was nearby, working on cleaning up the yard while I hid from the scorching Nebraska sun. - About life. Because the situation we were in was absurd, and yet, it was already becoming a core memory. Especially just sitting in that chair, taking in the world around me. Without Netflix. Without any electronics. And, in most cases, even without my phone. Gasp, I know. I wouldn't have paid attention to any of it without Eddie's book. Sure, he'll teach you how to be a better copywriter, how to be more creative, and how to push past self-doubt. But he also teaches you how to live a life that's worth slowing down for. Eddie, well done on The Book, man. It's relatable, easily understandable, and so interwoven with heart and charm. Just like every one of the micro lessons that came before it. #copywriting #creativity #creative #writing …more

Copywriter who creates demand for clients

A new obsession of mine: Very Good Copy by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner. These microlessons are really hitting the spot. There are plenty of good books on copywriting, but here’s the paradox—they’re not always easy to digest. I've been grinding through Joseph Sugarman's Handbook and struggling to finish the chapters. This book, though, helps you understand the copywriter's mindset first. And it’s bite-sized, packed with captivating stories to make the lessons stick. Today's takeaway:

In a world where clarity and brevity are king, this month's #spruikreads, Very Good Copy by Eddie Shleyner is a game-changer. This book isn’t just about writing good copy, it’s about transforming how you think. Shleyner’s approach builds new habits that lead to greater imagination and sharper writing. Shleyner’s concept of Micro-Lessons is genius. Each lesson is concise, making the book incredibly easy to consume and, more importantly, to apply. The innovative layout of the book enhances the already ground-breaking content, making it exciting to read and revisit. Shleyner’s lessons are designed to embed better thinking and writing habits. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or someone starting to dabble in some LinkedIn content, this book will change the way you approach writing copy. It’s readable, inspiring, and thought-provoking, peppered with quotes and anecdotes such as this one from Seth Godin makes it hard to put down. “Crafting a story that tricks people into making short-term decisions they regret in the long run is the worst form of marketing sin” Its focus on practical, actionable ideas sets "Very Good Copy" apart. Shleyner doesn’t waste time with dross, every page has insights you can implement immediately. This makes it a valuable resource you’ll return to again and again, regardless of your experience level. In short, Shleyner’s "Very Good Copy" is a must-read for anyone in marketing, advertising, or business for that matter. It's worth the cover price based on Shlyener's perspective on AI alone, which is both enlightened, enlightening, and entertaining. Highly recommended. #copywriting #writing …more

"Phil, I don't think I can start on Monday." It was 2014, my senior year of college. I'd just been offered a job as a barista at a local coffee shop. 3 problems: I didn't drink coffee. I didn't know how to make coffee. And I definitely didn't like smiling at strangers. I was, undoubtedly, a terrible hire. So I sent the owner, one of my old professors, a text a few days before I was supposed to start: "Phil, I don't think I can start on Monday. I really don't know anything about coffee and just don't think I'll be good at this job. I'm sorry." He responded a few minutes later: "Don't worry, we'll train you. You'll be fine." What? NO! My escape plan ruined, I showed up on Monday with a pit in my stomach. Someone showed me how to work the espresso machine. Then the first customer showed up. I took a deep breath and fumbled my way through making their drink before nervously handing it over. They took a sip... Their eyes lit up... "This is fantastic!" they said, "Best latte I've ever had!" Just kidding. They walked off to class without a word. The truth is, I'm sure that first latte sucked. (And my 2nd one, too.) My first 100 drinks were mediocre at best. But a few weeks in, I started getting the hang of it. A few months in, and I was cranking out Caramel Macchiatos with my eyes closed. By the end of the school year, I was a shift manager making $9.25 an hour (plus tips!!!). And now I have the honor of making my wife a latte every day before she heads off to work. I haven't thought about my text exchange with Phil since it happened almost 10 years ago. Until reading page 75 of Eddie Shleyner's new book the other day. Phil was the first person who popped into my head. ____________ We're quick to cast off new folks in whatever field we're in. I know I do. (I think we forget how bad we were when we first started.) If a new hire seems completely lost, tell them you believe in them. It doesn't matter if that's true or not, just tell them. They may not work out, but they'll always remember your kind words. P.S. Thanks, Phil, for saying you believed in me way back when... even though I'm sure it wasn't true. 😁

I've come to hate the word storytelling in b2b. We've ruined it. We throw it around everywhere as fake dressing to cover up our crap salad of marketing. Most of us aren't actually doing it. Our ads, LPs, blogs, are bland and forgettable. We call things stories that aren't actually stories. Problem/Solution stories are the bare bones basics but many of us aren't even doing that. I'm been guilty of it too. It's damn hard. But one person who does it constantly, and well, is 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner. One of the few folks whose work I actually enjoy reading to see what he's going to do, and come away learning something about copywriting with it. I've also gotten choked up more than once reading his stuff. He tells real stories effectively, consistently. His new book rocks too. That's all. Try and be more like Eddie. Linking one of his recent essays for Hubspot that shows what I mean.

I teared a little reading the prologue to this book and it is embarrassing. Because this is a book on copywriting - not quite meant to be a tearjerker, is it? But when Eddie Schleyner talks about how he landed his first copywriting job and how happy he felt just to be paid to write, I remembered my younger self. After years spent in a very practical education system where math and science always took precedence over language arts, I had learnt to suppress any creative inclinations. Till one day - finding out I could get paid for my words was liberation. Thus the tears. But like any tortured creator who keeps striving, I always wonder what else to do better. And Very Good Copy has answers for me. Eddie shares all the work he has done researching, studying, distilling and contextualizing copywriting, over however many seasons of his life, in one nicely bound book. I have been reading it at snail pace because ever microessay has ideas and thoughts so powerful that they demand I stop, think and connect. The book is challenging me to re-examine my craft and refine it in different ways and I know every copywriter who picks it up will be better for it. On the path to Very Good Copy. …more

This book is a goldmine (and I'm only 1/3 of the way through). But the nugget that has stuck with me the most isn't even in the microlessons, it's in the prologue. 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner tells the story of how he got into copywriting. "First, I began obsessively studying the craft ... Then, I wrote about what I learned." But when he started, he didn't do it to write a book or start his newsletter. He did it for himself, for his own growth. It reminded me of how excited I'd get to track down and try out new techniques when I started learning about social media. While I still do it for work, I miss doing it for myself, too. This book was the nudge that I needed to get back to it. Thanks for the inspo, Eddie! To anyone interested in copywriting (or anything copywriting adjacent), this book is a must-read, and so are his emails. I'll leave ya a link in the comments. …more

…more

Hand me a pen and I’ll turn the world upside down.

I’m fine. It’s just that 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s book on copywriting has me tearing up like I’m watching a classic Coke commercial at Christmastime.

Can't find the right words? I got you covered! Can't find the right words? I got you covered!

This book helped me reconnect to my passion and reason for being a copywriter, still today! It also gave me new perspectives on this profession and a way to see my recurrent impostor syndrome as just one part of the journey. Like what? Well, for example, the book's section 'On Thinking' comes before 'On Writing'. No need to explain why I find this is brilliant when you apply this process to copywriting, right? 🤓 I have been following Eddie's newsletter, VeryGoodCopy for some time and have never missed reading one. 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner is a generous (copy)writer who possesses innate talent and remarkable experience. He constantly emphasizes exercises, analysis, and self-reflection, because, yes, as a writer you need to do research, read, and learn (and copy!) from others. And "write carelessly" before "editing ruthlessly". So, if you're a copywriter, a writer, a creative, a student, or an artist, this volume will give you lots of inspiration and energy with three fundamental things: practical examples, powerful images, and great references. Here's one of my favourite passages: "Copywriters are not paid to write. Writing well is important but our job, above all else, is to think, to connect things. Connection, as it were, is our true work. Sometimes, this happens consciously, purposefully. And other times, our best connections are purely accidental."

Talks about finance too much | Content Strategist & Editor @ BWZ

Okay, here's the thing: I write about stuff that very few people WANT to read—finance, accounting, etc.—which means I need to make my words interesting. If I don't, I'll be no better than the college textbooks that made me want to gouge my eyes out. This means I have to put in work to be not boring, while teaching about objectively boring stuff. I know, "Boohoo, poor Simon". But it seems that whenever I start getting lazy and tempted to publish so-so content, Eddie pops into my inbox with tips and insights that get me to view my work more critically. Ergo, he gives me a path to becoming less boring. I've waitlisted the book—can't wait to see what else I'm doing that kinda sucks, and exactly how to improve it.
