The ghostwriter's true work: It's not writing. It's recognizing the client's human-ness. It's recognizing patterns. Preserving the relatable part of the founder's journey, and removing everything else. Showcasing just that. That's the work of a ghostwriter. The founder is sophisticated and intelligent. Accomplished, today. But what was the founder once curious about, that he/she has answers to now? What was the founder once clueless about, that the audience is clueless about today? "What to write next? What to write next? What to write next?" That's pressure. Making a founder sound smart. The next Naval Ravikant. That's pressure. Even Naval just talks about his curiosities. About everyday things: stress, meditation, the known, the unknown. 'Content strategy' is way too loaded. Keeping things simple, helpful, inspiring. That's thought leadership. That's expert positioning. _____ 📌 If you're an expert, you can educate your audience on autopilot. Book a 1:1 from my featured section, I'll show you how. P.S. Super how I'm now applying 🇺🇦 Eddie's ideas to ghostwriting. …more

Security Awareness Book Recommendation! Very Good Copy by Eddie Shleyner If you work in a security awareness role, there is a good chance that you will need to write copy from time to time. It could be Newsletters, Reports, Emails, Posters or Nudges. Read this book and have a pencil to write your thoughts in all the empty spaces. Then, reread it with a bunch of Post-it sticky markers so you can highlight pages to go back again and again. It’s that kind of book. Read it, and you’ll be better. It’s that simple. 643 grams. That’s how much 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s book ‘Very Good Copy’ weighs. It’s a whopper. But it’s a whopper I HAD to take on holiday because it arrived just before I went. And I couldn’t leave it at home and wait 2 weeks to read it (what with everyone raving about it on LinkedIn 🤩) It’s a delicious lesson in storytelling, copywriting and marketing. Actually it’s not just a lesson, there’s so much in there, it’s more like a flippin' degree. If you’ve been thinking about buying Eddie’s book, I can confirm it was worth the clothes I had to take out to fit it in 😉 What are your non-negotiables to take on holiday? #Copywriting #TravelLight

🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner honestly, no BS, it's one of the best copywriting books I've read 👌🏼 I've just finished the "think like a copywriter" part of the book. Now moving into the "write like one" section. It's making me excited about copy again after a loooooonnngggg lull.

A masterclass in storytelling for ANYONE who writes—be it an ad, email, slide deck, or post… I’ve had anything but a linear career path, which makes me at times wonder what I missed from a more “traditional“ starting point. Eddie takes you back in time and along for the ride as he put in the work to master his craft. Honesty, humility, grit. This book isn’t about writing, rather thinking and practice and process… Smart ideas and approaches from people who became legends due to their ability to influence with words—in other words, something for EVERYONE. Bravo, 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner. #copywriting …more

I just bought 🇺🇦 Eddie's new book. I'm giving away 5 more to my friends on here. Here's how: 1. I'll pick 5 random friends that comment. 2. Nobody better to teach it in the modern era than Ed. He's also a dad like me so drop your favorite dad joke and let's blow this up for him! 👇

A quick Sunday reminder to go do something else... This is one my favorite anecdotes from 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner (it's in his book Very Good Copy). The best creative work comes from having space and time away from your keyboard. This new book by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner deserves to be an instant copywriting classic. It landed through my letterbox late on Saturday. Aside from a night’s sleep, my habitual Sunday morning cycle ride, and a little Olympics watching, I’ve hardly put it down. I devoured all 451 pages by the time I went to bed last night. Next I’ll go back over it, adding more notes and picking out key passages and quotes. What’s so good about it? It’s not just instructive, it’s an inspiring and intimate look at copywriting through the lens of Eddie’s life experiences. Most of the 207 ‘micro-lessons’ about thinking and writing are vignettes based on personal stories. They make the author relatable, forging a strong bond with the reader. Eddie comes across as a lovely, caring and thoughtful guy. This has a halo effect, making his writing eminently engaging and persuasive. Almost as persuasive as a thug threatening to rip out your fingernails with a pair of pliers. Almost, but not quite. Do yourself a favour and buy Eddie’s book. It will make you a better writer. Its true life tales may even make you a better parent, partner, pet owner, friend and colleague. What are you waiting for? Assuming your fingers are still intact, put them to good use and order your copy now. …more

An absolute masterclass on writing ✍🏼 If you write anything--emails, ads, website, blogs, notes for your significant other, lunchbox messages for your kids--read Very Good Copy. In a different, fictional life where I'm a professor, I assign this book to my classes. 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner is so vulnerable and authentic in these micro-lessons because the thing that matters most is connections (read the book and you'll see what I mean). My spark for writing never goes out, but VeryGoodCopy has set it ablaze. I've spent a career writing, and this book reminded me that the "curious idiot" in me is much stronger than the "know-it-all" writer. Thank you a thousand times for this fantastic book, Eddie. …more

It's not often I read non fiction before bed, but this book bucks the trend. It reminds me of Dave Trott's books, a collection of stories with salient points about creativity, marketing and copywriting. After each one I find myself drawn to the next ("it's only 210 words") when really I should turn off the light. Here's one takeaway so far, that every founder and CEO needs to remember: "If the market doesn't like or want or need what you're selling, even the best copywriter in the world can't help you". Congratulations 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner on the book 🙌

"Fricken Fantastic Copy." That's what this book should be called. I can't remember a time when I wasn't following 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's work. His blog of the same name became a staple in my media diet the moment I found it. He respected my time, but also knew I wanted to learn, so he cut away everything that didn't serve the lesson, and respected me enough as a reader to know I could fill in the gaps. Over the years, I feel I got to know Eddie more because of the way he used his personal experiences to teach. He's one of the few who can bring you into the tiniest moments and create an entire universe of meaning. It's one thing to read these micro-lessons and anecdotes on the screen, it's another to hold them in your hand. You quite literally feel the weight of these nuggets of wisdom. And you especially feel their impact at 11:23 pm when you're lying in bed and the book slips out of your hands and hits you in the face. Every word, every line length, and every piece of punctuation in this book has been carefully selected to ensure you feel EXACTLY how Eddie wants you to feel. There isn't a ounce of fat in this book, and it is, word for word, full of pure, concentrated value. Great job Eddie. You're an inspiration! …more

A boatload of copywriters have already told you what an extraordinarily useful book 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s ‘Very Good Copy’ is, and of course they’re absolutely right. So, rather than add to that can I say how beautifully Eddie has written it. The lessons in there could help any writer up their game, but they’re all told so warmly and entertainingly that you find yourself reading every page twice - once for the joy of it, then again for the wisdom. (The picture is one of my favourite parts so far). Bravo to one of the nicest people in copywriting on a triumph of a book. #copywriting #writing #CopywritersUnite #WritingCommunity #marketing #book …more

It's time for my very irregular Curmudgeon Report. You might not think so from the first few paragraphs but . . . just hang on a few. I just picked up Eddie Shleyner's new book Very Good Copy as I'm flying into DC for the Bridge Conference. Such an easy read. I'm only about 25% into it and I know this will change my writing. It's already changed how I think about copy -- and I've been doing this for more than 40 years. He quotes the great Eugene Schwartz: "The words in advertising are like windows in a store. You must be able to look through them and see the product. If you see the window, it's dirty -- you're going to see yourself, or you're going to see the smear. You're not going to see the product, and you're going to lose." Frankly, that quote alone is worth the price of the book. When I think back on the copy I've read in most of the hundreds of direct mail appeals I received in the last few weeks, I can feel my inner curmudgeon come out. Very few appeals allow me to see the product. Now, some of you might say we aren't a product, we're a ministry. We're different. No. You're. Not. Too many packages try to fool me into the envelope. Andrew Olsen's recent post about the "trick" of never asking again is just one of too many examples to cite. Somehow we think our "customers" (read donors) are idiots. But as David Ogilvy said decades ago (and it's still true): "the customer is not an idiot. She's your wife." So why do we do it? Why do we continue to let our words dirty the windows or try to fool our customers into buying our products? I'm a part of the "we" as much as anyone else. So I have to ask: Why do we continue to do it? I think it's because we're lazy. It's easy. We get just enough response to keep it up and not learn and grow. Imagine if we did things differently. If we used our words to showcase our product in a way that impels people to respond. Imagine if we actually were concerned about building relationships not just getting someone to make a transaction. I don't know Eddie Shleyner from Adam. I do know that he knows his stuff. So if you write copy or you read copy or you want to make a difference, I urge you to get his book. You can get it on Amazon: lnkd.in/g6JUgZhZ Thanks, 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner. I'll continue to dig in. Since we're both in the Chicago area, maybe I can buy you a cup of coffee and dig a bit deeper.

This book is a must-read for 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 who wants to write better copy. I’m giving away 5 of it today. Want one? About the book: Very Good Copy has 207 micro-lessons (think short chapters) from 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner on copywriting—110 on thinking like a copywriter and 97 on writing like one. I like reading physical books to highlight, write notes, and dog-ear pages. I’ve marked up almost all pages in my copy—it’s that good. Want a free copy? Easy: ➜ Like this post. ➜ Comment your corniest dad, mom, or parent joke (since Eddie’s a dad and he talks about it a few times in his book). ➜ I’ll ship the book to the top 5 jokes. Shoutout to Brendan Hufford who did a similar contest last week. "If I could give you one skill to improve your life (and career), it'd be copywriting," said Brendan. "Eddie is the best person to teach it in the modern era." I agree. Here are three of my favorite micro-lessons from the book. 1. Incubation: Great copywriters take breaks. If stuck, they get up and do something else to distract themselves. Why? One word: incubation. It’s our brain’s ability to subconsciously process information and make connections. When stuck, take a break. Go for a walk, take a shower, or cook. Let your brain incubate the ideas. 2. Contrast: Great creative work often happens when opposite things and concepts intersect: - Loooooong + shrt - Clean + diRtY - BIG + small Use contrast in your copy to create interest and intrigue. Combine opposing elements to make your writing more engaging and memorable. 3. Benefits: If your copy feels generic and flat, use the “So what?” exercise. It’ll help you uncover a feature’s core benefit. Write down the benefit of a feature. Then ask yourself, “So what? What is the benefit of that benefit?” Repeat until you arrive at what the prospect truly desires, consciously or otherwise. …more

I've seen plenty of recommendations from fellow copywriters for 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's new book, "Very Good Copy." But did you know it was so good that even my cat read it? And Queen Dulcinea doesn't like anything, so you know it must be a solid read when she knocks it out of my hand and steals it for herself. 😻 She told me she plans to use what she learned to launch her copywriting career and fund her catnip obsession. Thank goodness Eddie's book didn't teach her how to grow some thumbs or we'd all be in trouble. I got a ✨little treat✨ in the mail yesterday - 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's new book, Very Good Copy: 207 Micro-Lessons on Thinking and Writing Like a Copywriter. While I normally read books within a few days of getting them, something told me to take a different approach. Before it arrived, I decided to read 1-2 lessons a day to get my mind right before starting my days. Ironically, the first lesson tied perfectly into this: "Slow looking" is an assignment given to all Jennifer Roberts's students at Harvard University. Choose a painting or sculpture in the local museum, and study it for 3 hours–no distractions. It's that patient, immersive attention that lays the groundwork for critical thinking and finding meaning. The act of slowing down forces you to be thoughtful and intentional. Shleyner writes, "Time illuminates the details. Details give way to connections. And connections are the basis of creativity." What if we all took that approach–completing things at the pace dictated by the task at hand? #slowlooking #copywriting #yourmultifamilymarketer #development

The content itself is excellent of course, as we have come to expect with Eddie, but the innovative presentation is the cherry on top. By making each lesson easily consumable, Eddie leads us towards better thinking and writing habits. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The title says it all 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner As someone who considers themselves at the beginner stages of copywriting, this is the book I needed to read 3 years ago. A lot of the lessons and material do come from Eddie's email, which you should subscribe to, but there is something different in reading back to back lessons in a book. This is the MUST have book for every marketer and copywriter. Thank you for creating it. …more

Hey UX Designers: 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's book "Very Good Copy" is a must-read for not just UX microcopy writers, but for writing in general. I've learned more in 20 pages than I've learned from entire books in the past. You're welcome. 😉

This is the view from my "bird balcony." It is where I often sit to drink my coffee and read a good book. As the name and picture suggest, it attracts a lot of native birds. Our house backs onto bushland, and so we often get visits from the locals—Rainbow Lorikeets, King Parrots, and these guys, the Cockatoos. I've even taken to buying native bird seed. What better place to take a photo of 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's new book, "Very Good Copy," and show him that it made it to Australia? The Book is unlike any other book on copywriting you may have read. It is arranged into a series of micro lessons that both entertain and educate, demonstrating copywriting principles to help you think and write like a copywriter. However, it goes beyond that. It imparts a deeper human lesson, emphasizing the importance of noticing small details, experiencing emotions, and thinking more slowly. Among the lessons are personal stories that create a closeness, like you're reading about an old friend. This makes the book addictive to read, and one I'll surely be coming back to time and again. If you are in marketing or advertising or just someone who wants to learn to write well, you must read this book. Congrats, Eddie, and greetings from Sydney! …more

🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner doesn’t just transform landing pages. He also transforms the way I think about writing. — 3 years ago, he transformed the way I think about writing copy. 3 days ago, he transformed the way I think about writing content. — I used to think content writing was all about quantity *over* quality. There's some truth to this—especially when every piece of online writing is at the mercy of an algorithm. I've spent 10 minutes on a post that got 75,000 views. I've also spent 10 days on a post that got 7 views. This led me to believe the quality of my content didn't always matter. But then I read Eddie's book. It showed me writing content isn't about quantity over quality... — Writing content is about quantity *of* quality. And that takes time. — "The Very Good Copy Book" contains 207 micro-lessons that were written, rewritten, and curated over the span of more than a decade. As a result, each one of them is as valuable, impactful, and well-crafted as the last. Not a single word goes to waste. You can feel the thought and care Eddie put into every sentence. Making every one of the 450 pages a priceless pearl of wisdom. It's my favorite book on copywriting I’ve ever read. Because it's about more than writing words. It's about writing *VERY GOOD* words (for a very long time.) — Congratulations on this huge achievement, Eddie. You've set the standard (once again.) …more

So, a week ago, my timeline started flooding with reviews of VeryGoodCopy's 207 Micro-Lessons for copywriters by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner but I couldn't find the paperback on Amazon India. The FOMO hit fast. And it hard. I DMed Eddie about my "crisis" and he replied that the Kindle version would be out the next day. I waited. I downloaded. I relished. You know how at times you get disappointed with a movie or a book because their stellar reviews hoisted your expectations a bit too high? Well, this was NOT such an instance. My first impression? Relief. Being in the content creation field is a constant battle with imposter syndrome and the nagging need for originality. This book tells you that it's okay—to be unproductive (at times), to be unoriginal, to be human—as long as you keep trying, keep reimagining, keep it real. No, I won't be drinking the Kool-Aid. I'll stay curious until I stumble upon my "Hello Kitty idea". Thanks Eddie, for making this so relatable and reassuring. It's the best 207 pieces of advice I needed today (and will need for later). P.S.: Adding one extra star for the pictures ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ + ⭐ …more

Cut through the noise to create unforgettable marketing

The weather is finally nice in Indy this morning. It’s just below seventy degrees, slightly humid, with a soft breeze. The oppressive heat of the weekend has moved on. Coffee in hand, I started reading this new book by 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner on our patio, and it feels like therapy. Not sure I was ready for this. Part one is about thinking like a copywriter. It would be more aptly titled, “Feeling Like A Human.” Quick stories about love and loss and life remind me that great copywriting is about feeling what your audience feels and putting it into words. Copywriting isn’t art, but it has to have emotion just the same. I tend to push through tasks at a quick pace. Eddie reminds me to slow down, take time to reflect, feel, and ship it when it’s right. I’m 75 pages in and not sure I’m going to get any work done today. I’ve been looking forward to this book for a while. Thanks, Eddie. …more

Very Good Copy crunches 10+ years of micro-essays on creativity, storytelling, and persuasion into a ~Very~ consumable format — 110 on THINKING like a copywriter, 97 on WRITING like one. I’m gonna be straight with you… I think every marketer and advertiser who wants harder hitting messages should read this. This is not a paid ad or influencer spot — Eddie’s writing is just that great. I’ll be spending my hard earned dineros to give this book to plenty of my industry peeps. I’ve been feeling a bit queasy. I think I’ve got Augustitis. It’s a seasonal affliction – one that gets me every year. The main symptom is the unsettling feeling that I’m done for, that I will never work again. You’d think I’d know better by now. I’ve survived 26 quiet summers after all. Why should this August be the August of my undoing? Well, I know that I probably won’t fall out of the top of the lighthouse that I’ve been brave enough to climb either, but try telling that to the jelly legs. And, despite what my experience tells me, I still find myself grappling with anxiety and uncertainty at this time of year, in the eerie silence following busy, busy June. In Denmark, you can pretty much write off July, as the country empties and clients sun themselves on the beaches of Lake Garda – it’s tumbleweed for the entire month here. I’ve been away, too, and it’s actually quite nice to be able to take some time off without the guilt creeping in and worrying that I’m letting my clients down or feeling that I constantly have to check my emails. There aren’t any. August is a different matter, though. People are back, and you expect the work to return, but there’s the post-holiday lull. But do you know what? It’s actually pretty great to have the time to finally catch up on all the work-related stuff that usually gets left to future me. To read those books I keep buying, stacked up on the shelf (cue photo featuring 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's very excellent Very Good Copy). To sort out my accounts (urgh). To sign up for courses. To post on LI. To embrace those chirping crickets… In a couple of weeks, life will be back to its noisy, hectic self, and I’ll likely be wishing I wasn’t quite so swamped. Septemberosis?

To 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner, your book is wonderful. I’ve barely read it—and I mean this as the greatest compliment. It’s already the most useful book on copywriting I’ve seen. Wish I had this 20 years ago. And inspires me as I (continue to) wrangle my own book. Well done. To everyone else, check out “Very Good Copy” This isn’t just a book for copywriters. It’s a book for people who use words for a living. HEY GUESS WHAT THAT’S YOU.

Who’s ready for the weekend? While my ‘plate’ is still pretty full for this afternoon I’ve got a nice early birthday present today to enjoy over the weekend. I first saw Matthew Wood with a copy of 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner’s book ‘Very Good Copy’ and thought it would be worth investing in a copy. Thanks to Amazon and my Dad, the book turned up today 🙂 A major lesson I learned from working in financial services is that things never stay the same for long and this very much applies to copywriting. There are always ways to improve, ways to get new inspiration and ideas that keeps your skill set fresh and I think Very Good Copy will be a great tool to utilise going forward. Enjoy your weekend everybody! #freelancecopywriter #copywriting #freelancewriter #goodread …more

It’s Friday and it’s been a long week of writing. Ads, speaking sessions, battle cards, emails. Messaging and copywriting are my favorite parts of being a PMM. But you know when it’s Friday and you’ve been staring at a screen all week? Today, I felt my creativity lagging and I’m telling myself, “Okay, I’ve already had my two cups of coffee so… how do I make quick work of this product page, without a 3rd or 4th cup?” 1. Get out from behind the screen 2. Get off my ass 3. Breakout the whiteboard 4. Start flipping through 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner Very Good Copy (shameless plug bc this book is great) And now I’ve got a full page outline. Time to write ✍️ #productmarketing …more

I started following 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner during my early days as a copywriter (nearly 10 years ago 🤯) and his posts here always deliver. One thing I really like about Eddie’s style is how approachable he makes his writing. It’s crisp, it’s clear, and it draws you in. While I may not be an official copywriter anymore, it’s still a huge part of my role as a PMM, and I apply a lot of Eddie’s lessons to my own writing. Highly recommend “Very Good Copy” to anyone — especially PMMS — who want to level up their writing. #pmm #copywriting …more

For months now, my LinkedIn followers have been pestering me with the same request: "When are you going to write a book on copywriting?" They insist I've got the chops, the stories, the battle scars. And they're not wrong. I used to tell them the reason I haven’t written a book is because I’m lazy. Now I can tell them the truth. I have no need to write a book an about copywriting because 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner has, more or less, already written it. I say “more or less” because Eddie has added more gems of wisdom than I would have added, and the stories he wraps them are of course his own. But I also say it because Eddie is one of the few copywriters LinkedIn whose posts I read regularly and actually learn new things from. And because I consider Eddie be a better copywriter. "Very Good Copy" is like having a seasoned pro perched on your shoulder, whispering trade secrets in your ear. It's the kind of book about copywriting you will always want within arms reach. It currently sits in the coveted place of books keep on my desk and every time I open it I want to grab a pen and start scribbling notes in the margins. There’s just one problem. Every page is already a note, distilled to its essence and ready for immediate application. Because in the end, great copy isn't about showing off how clever you are. It’s about clarity, impact, and results. And that's exactly what Shleyner delivers, 207 times over. So I just end up writing the copy I needed to be writing in the first place. If you’d like a book to do the same for you then don’t wait for me to write mine. Grab a copy of Eddie’s. Thanks Eddie, for saving me all sorts of trouble. For now. ;-). Making things happen with words

Well, that was unexpected. When I picked up 🇺🇦 Eddie Shleyner's book, Very Good Copy: 207 Micro-Lessons on Thinking and Writing Like a Copywriter, I thought it'd help me be a better writer. Halfway through, I've found seven little nuggets on doing life better. Lessons I hurriedly scribbled on a piece of paper on my bedside table. A gentle reminder to stay human. Live more. Feel more. I'll park these here, in case you find them useful. 1. Slow. Down. 2. Be curious. 3. Experience more. 4. Let yourself fail. Learn. Try again. Then fail some more. 5. Zoom in on the details, micro moments. That's where the magic lives. 6. People-watch more. 7. Listen. Always listen. Thanks Eddie 😊
