Technical breakdown of the Ideal Manufacturing LLC Cope Machine:
This two station cope machine is demonstrated here being fed by a UR 20. This robot is a bit overkill for the application but accomplishes the job with its impressive 68in reach.
The control system for this machine is based on a Beckhoff Automation CX series processor which enabled easy to implement multi-axis motion control and logic control. We also rely on the TwinSAFE platform to seamlessly manage the safety logic for this machine. Phoenix Contact supplies safe zero speed monitoring for the 2 high speed 9kw spindles powered by Lenze i500 series VFDs over EtherCAT. These spindles have quick change HSK tool holders and are capable of 12000 RPM in this configuration.
Compact motion control keeps the cabinet size low with the EL72xx series drives which drive the Beckhoff AM8000 servo motors to provide reliable, precise motion for cutting and positioning of the spindles in 3 dimensional space in combination with Apex gearboxes and Metal Work's linear actuators. The spindle gantry is built of 3/4in steel to reduce vibration and improve cut quality. This results in a gantry with estimated weight of 300lbs.
Pneumatics are controlled using Metal Works EB80 IO-Link valve bank with an interrupted power section for safe state operation.
Weintek offers this clean, quality HMI from the CMTX series and easy communication to the PLC over ADS.

Below is the HMI for an inspection system with a robot to sort good/bad parts after inspection. I also wrote all the PLC code for this and did the electrical design. Can't wait to see it all in action.

For automation systems with a limited budget, Weintek is quite a value compared to other platforms. In addition to the hardware cost being very competitive, the software is free to download, free to use, and tech support is free. No extra costs for your controls techs to view/troubleshoot code.
Not to mention these units can also run Codesys for PLC programming!

Hi, I'm Jacob and #IamHAHN since 2020. I first joined HAHN Automation Group as a co-op student, completing three rotations between 2020 and 2021 while studying at the University of Cincinnati. After graduating, I started full time in May 2023 as a Controls Engineer in Software. In this role, I program and debug machines from power on through final shipment. I work with Allen Bradley PLCs, ROS2 systems in Ubuntu, HMIs (Allen Bradley and Weintek), Machine Vision Systems (Cognex and Keyence), and more.
Even early on, my time at HAHN was filled with learning and hands-on experience. Now, full time, it continues to be a rewarding journey with plenty of variety. What I appreciate most is that every day brings something new. I am constantly expanding my technical knowledge, improving my communication skills, and stepping into leadership opportunities through customer interaction and group coordination.
A standout moment was programming a show machine with Mecademic robots in my first year and traveling to the ATX Trade Show in California. It opened my eyes to the scale of the automation industry and gave me the chance to meet other integrators and vendors. Another proud achievement has been seeing a project through from start to finish and watching a machine ship out successfully.
My best experience at HAHN has been taking on a customer's new end of line functional tester. It is a significant departure from our typical project at HAHN, which made it especially fulfilling. Through this project, I gained valuable technical skills like Ubuntu, ROS2, EtherCAT, Python, MQTT, and Weintek HMI. I also formed connections with the customer's software team and have become HAHN’s go-to person for this technology which is great for my career growth and something I’m proud of.
